Born and bred in Western Australia, I’m often asked for suggestions on things to do in Perth with friends. So, I thought it was time to write this Perth itinerary for an unforgettable getaway with your besties in true Fluffy Towel style.

We’ll be exploring Perth, the state’s capital city, from a unique perspective, as well as everyone’s favourite port town, Fremantle and then Western Australia’s oldest wine region in the Swan Valley. You and your besties will require a sense of adventure and a healthy appetite for this memorable 3-day Perth itinerary.

Perth Itinerary Day 1: The CBD

Lace up your sneakers and bring your sense of adventure as we head to Elizabeth Quay, deemed Perth’s premier waterfront entertainment precinct. Hovering between the Swan River and Perth’s CBD, follow the Elizabeth Quay Bridge for a unique perspective of the city skyline punctuated by the curvaceous Spanda, a sculpture representing the rippling river.

At 10am, board a boutique solar electric ferry with The Little Ferry Co. and get off at Optus Stadium, WA’s 60,000-seat state-of-the-art multi-purpose stadium. But we’re not going to see a match or a concert. Instead, we’re going to climb 314 steps above the river to the SkyView and then zipline 400m back down at 75km/hr. I say “we”, but if like me, heights terrify you, I have a less scary option – you can enjoy a round at the 18-hole Matagarup Mini Golf course next door or simply walk across the bridge to East Perth for riverfront dining at Goia, The Partisan, Toast Café or The Royal on the Waterfront. Or, if you’re on the same side of the river as Optus Stadium, enjoy lunch at one of the country’s largest pubs at The Camfield.

You can either jump back on the ferry or grab an Uber to the city at your leisure. This afternoon, explore the city on foot by browsing the shops in Forrest Place, the Hay Street Mall, Murray Street Mall and King Street for high-end fashion. Running between the Hay Street Mall and St George’s Terrace, don’t miss the historic Tudor-style London Court full of souvenir shops and old-world charm, plus chiming clocks at each of the entrances with miniature knights engaging in battle as the clocks chime. Or head into Northbridge in search of dim sum in Chinatown, my favourite is the Northbridge Chinese Restaurant on Roe Street.

If nature is calling, one of the world’s largest inner-city parks hovers over the city at Kings Park, Perth’s answer to New York City’s Central Park. Spanning over 400 hectares of natural scrub, kilometres of walking and cycling trails and 17 hectares of botanical gardens and the Lotterywest Federation Walkway. Time your visit right for the year-round calendar of music, theatre, film, art, wellness and horticultural events and festivals. Mulled wine will keep you warm during Lightscape during the cooler months as Kings Park’s landscape comes to life at night through Gar-up Lookout, Kings Perthugh a series of light installations – it’s a magical way to experience the park.

If time permits, take a wander through the Perth Cultural Centre to admire the impressive architecture, WA’s rich history and talented artists at the WA Museum Boola Bardip, the Art Gallery of Western Australia and PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts), which all have permanent and transitional exhibitions and events throughout the year.

You have many options tonight, whether it’s cocktails at a rooftop bar like the AGWA Rooftop, the Rooftop at QT or Hello Rooftop Bat at The Rechabite. Or you can join the fray in Northbridge brimming with bars and cuisine from all over the globe, or join a walking tour with Hidden DeTours. Alternatively, you might crave some culture with a show at the State Theatre Centre (Northbridge), His Majesty’s Theatre (Perth), the Comedy Club (Perth), Crown Entertainment Complex (Burswood), The Astor (Mt Lawley), Regal Theatre (Subiaco) or the Ellington Jazz Club (Perth).

Perth Itinerary Day 2: Fremantle

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast and epic views of the Indian Ocean at Bib & Tucker (Leighton Beach) or the Roasting Warehouse (I highly recommend the Eggs Benny Chan) in South Fremantle. Or head to the eateries within the historic Fremantle Markets for a pastry, multi-cultural options and excellent coffee before enjoying a wander around the 150 stalls of art, jewellery, clothing, fresh produce, performance art and buskers.

While you’re in the mood for shopping, meander along the Cappuccino Strip (aka South Terrace), High Street Mall and the West End Heritage Precinct for unique boutiques, jewellery, homewares stores, and you can’t miss the New Edition Bookshop. There is just as much to admire on the streets with Fremantle’s stunning architecture, street art and galleries, such as the Moore’s Building Contemporary Art Gallery, Kidogo ArtHouse and PS Art Space (Pakenham Street Art Space).

While in Fremantle’s West End, make a pitstop at the Round House, the state’s oldest building offering fantastic ocean vistas and views across Fremantle. Follow Whalers Tunnel beneath the Round House to Bather’s Beach for lunch with sand between your toes at The Bathers Beachhouse. Or head back into town to Moore & Moore, Bread In Common or Gino’s on the Cappuccino Strip for a bite.

Delve further into Fremantle’s cultural heart at the gothic-style Fremantle Arts Centre, built in 1864 by convicts as a lunatic asylum and believed to be one of the most haunted spots in the state. Spread over four acres, the centre hosts an extensive program of visual art exhibitions, live performances and creative workshops.

Or embrace WA’s rich maritime history at the Shipwreck Galleries, where you can explore some of Australia’s oldest shipwrecks. The WA Maritime Museum is equally fascinating, so don’t miss the Submarine Ovens, a memorial to the submariners who lost their lives during WWII and the America’s Cup-winning yacht Australia II.

Join a day tour at the Fremantle Prison, or take the haunting a step further on a nighttime torchlight tour and be enthralled by the port town’s sordid past. Daredevils can visit the gruesome gallows and trek by foot and boat through the labyrinth of tunnels 20 metres below on the Tunnels Tour.

You’ll wash away all that gruesomeness tonight with a bar hop and snacks through Fremantle. Simply strolling the streets will reveal a plethora of bars for you to discover yourself. Some of my favourites include the limited-release gins and vodkas at the Republic of Fremantle, Strange Company, the pirate-inspired Darling Darling, Jungle Bird and Vin Populi, and although I haven’t been there yet, the Honky Tonk Blues Bar intrigues me for its southern hospitality and live music.

If your schedule permits, extend your time with a day trip or longer on Rottnest Island, about a 30-minute ferry ride from Fremantle. Famed for its quokkas, explore the island by bike, segway, bus or on foot on one of the few remaining spots on earth where cars are banned. The coastal vistas, craggy coves, snorkelling and unspoilt beaches are reminiscent of the Mediterranean complete with beachside dining and epic sunsets.

Perth Itinerary Day 3: The Swan Valley

As you board your minibus, you can take a little snooze to sleep off last night’s indulgences, but not for long as we head to WA’s original wine region in the Swan Valley, about 30 minutes from the city.

Brace yourself, as the Swan Valley is full of temptations at its many wineries, breweries, distilleries, restaurants and fresh produce outlets. You might like to make a pitstop at Swan Valley Visitors Centre to pick up a map and plot your own adventure or download a map here. Or let your King Mini Bus driver guide you if you prefer to sit back and relax.

Here are my suggestions for the ultimate day out in the Swan Valley with friends.

Stop for coffee and a macaroon at the French-inspired Maison Saint Honorè, before heading for a wine tasting at Lancaster Wines, set among vines for as far as the eye can see. On the other side of West Swan Road, you might like to pop into the Providore and Coward & Black to pick up some gourmet treats, and it’s pretty self-explanatory why anyone of any age visits the Margaret River Chocolate Factory.

The Swan Valley isn’t only about wine, Old Young’s Distillery

Stop at the Old Young’s Distillery for a tasting of their gin and vodkas. You could join a gin masterclass or stop here for lunch and sample their tasty menu of native ingredients. Or hit the road and head to Funk Brewshed https://funkdrinks.co/pages/brewshed, where I have to say their limited-release Cacao Cider cider is my new favourite drink. Succumb to a lazy lunch at Upper Reach, Stewart’s Restaurant, Sandalford Winery or wherever takes your fancy.

It’s almost mandatory to have a tasting John Kosovich Wines, one of the oldest wineries in the Swan Valley or the fortified collection at Talijancich Wines. Unless you need more spirits in your life with a tasting at Damaged Goods Distilling Co, Swan River Distillery or the Limeburner’s & Giniversity in the Valley, where you can take a masterclass to craft your own gin.

Head over to The Vines for 18 holes of mini golf before joining Perth’s only kangaroo safari aboard golf carts, where you’ll have the chance to mingle with a colony of kangaroos as the sun sets in the distance.

Getting around Perth:

There are many ways to get around Perth by Uber, public transport or hire a car, which is probably the easiest option. Or you can do it in style and join a tour for all types of tastes in a variety of vehicle sizes, so you can bring as many friends as you want. Tourism Western Australia makes several recommendations here.

How to get to Perth:

If you’re arriving at the domestic or international Perth Airport King Mini Bus Charter Hire offer airport transfers in comfort in a variety of vehicles sizes, including vehicles with baby seats, to anywhere in the metropolitan area and beyond, Since the Swan Valley is only a few minutes from the airport, you can arrive in Perth and be swirling wine within the hour with a direct transfer.

Travelling between the domestic or international airport and central Perth is an easy 20 to 30-minute ride by car, taxi, ride share, public bus or train. Terminals T1, T2, T3 and T4 are located across two separate terminal precincts, and it’s a 15-minute drive between the two, or you can catch the free Terminal Transfer Bus.

The award-winning adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s stage production Poe Dreams of Madness runs at the Garrick Theatre from 27^th September to 12^th October. I hope you enjoy my theatre review, but here’s a little disclaimer before I delve into this spooky performance.

No matter what anyone claims, theatre reviews are generally subjective, as the writer’s life experiences and nuances can’t help but influence their impressions. Writing a theatre review where your daughter is one of the directors will undoubtedly be biased. How can it not be? Being closely associated with someone who works on and off stage brings unique insight into an industry where drama, determination and grit are the key ingredients. The amount of work involved in putting on a stage production is unfathomable, particularly in community theatre, where the budget is modest and the passion of its volunteers soars.

Okay, so now that is out of the way, onto the show. Established in 1932, the Garrick Theatre, set in historic Guildford, is Perth’s longest-running community theatre, and the Poe production put on by the TAG (Teens at Garrick) celebrates the theatre group’s 10th anniversary in 2024. TAG encourages 13 to 18-year-olds to explore the theatre industry, from acting to building self-confidence and creatively challenging themselves. For Poe Dreams of Madness, Gail Lusted (founder and director of TAG) shares the role with TAG alumnus Paris Jenner (my daughter) in a collaboration of creativity and vision.

Poe Dreams of Madness is a series of vignettes based on author and poet Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tales in an adaptation scripted by Elissa Hynes. The production features classic and original material, including The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher (currently playing on Netflix), The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red Death and The Raven. While each scene captures a standalone tale, they all weave together cohesively through a rich narrative indulging in a dynamic performance, which at times is chilling, further pronounced by it being performed in a theatre rumoured to be haunted.

It begins at midnight when Poe struggles with insomnia…or at least that’s what he thinks is happening, “I am haunted by dreams, even when I wake. And so, I wander in this dazed stupor, unsure if I am awake or asleep, unsure if I am alive.”

This sets the tone for the entire performance guided by a raven, played by Ginny Moore-Price, acting as a mischievous and macabre character throughout the gothic show.

Much of the talented cast came to the production as novices, which is impressive given their ages, many of who play multiple roles. Their sheer delight at discovering their newfound talent was a joy to witness, and I suspect many will continue to develop their skills; at least, I hope they have the opportunity to do so.

This was Paris’ directing debut, and she was also instrumental in taking the headshots for publicity, the set design and sound production. “We are in awe of the cast. They have taken everything we’ve thrown at them and run with it. We had some drop out early on, and rather than recast, we just gave them another character to portray – some play four roles. They exit one scene and immediately come back as somebody completely different. Add to that…a lot of them are first-timers,” shared Paris.

Annie Dahn

Newcomer to the theatre, Annie Dahn plays Poe, whose endearing personality weaves in and out of her evocative narration with impeccable timing. Olivia Keary is the cast’s youngest member and has only been involved with TAG since early 2024. She brought a cheeky quality to her roles, delivering her elocution so eloquently that it belied her tender age of 12.

Clayton Schelfhout made his acting debut and delivered a powerful performance in his compelling portrayal of some of Poe’s most iconic characters. Short in stature but large in presence, Juliette Botha’s experience from high school productions was evident, particularly when playing the scary role of the Mad Narrator. Piper Gibson’s experience as a member of TAG and the WA Youth Theatre’s beginner’s ensemble exuded a maturity beyond her 13 years in several roles, particularly as the sombre Friend.

The dialogue is robust, and how the actors remember and convincingly deliver so many lines always amazes me. I loved how varied the storytelling was, woven in intrigue and humour, making it relatable to anyone, whether you’re an avid theatregoer or someone who has come along for a bit of escapism.

The front-of-house and stage design serve the storytelling well by acting as a moody backdrop, versatile enough to interchange between each scene with little disruption to the dialogue and actors. Along with the costumes and haunting soundtrack, this was a clever design choice guided by a limited budget to seek out sustainable options from props sourced from within the theatre and the production team. I had a giggle playing eye-spy at some of my own furnishings and wardrobe appearing on stage – but I won’t ruin the mystery.

Each performance differs from the next as the directing team plays with varying treatments of the scenes while leaning into the cast’s strengths on any given day.

Exploring multiple themes, including madness and the human psyche, no doubt each audience member will take away a unique interpretation of Poe’s stage production. “His stories not only reflect the literary conventions of the Romantic era but also anticipate the psychological horror genre that would later become prominent in literature. Creepy, thought-provoking, eerie, morbid. What more could anyone want?”

While WA’s coastline spans a staggering 12,889km, the cosmopolitan city is laid out in a compact grid. Most shops and eateries are along the Hay and Murray Street malls and the adjacent lanes, streets, and arcades, including the historic Trinity Arcade and London Court.

Perth’s cosmopolitan reputation attracts international acclaim for its fantastic lifestyle and Mediterranean climate, bathing its residents and visitors in glorious year-round weather. Within a 30-minute drive of Perth, you can be in the historic port town of Fremantle, the state’s oldest wine region in the Swan Valley, on spectacular beaches or delving into rural adventures.

Perth with Kids: Getting around Perth

The Central Business District (CBD) is easy to explore on foot, and the Central Area Transit (CAT) is a free bus service operating across the city, but you can also jump on any Transperth bus travelling within the city for free. Trains and buses run from the city, and you can take a train or ferry to Fremantle, South Perth or the Swan Valley region.

Perth with Kids Itinerary Day 1 – Perth City

Let’s start the day with spectacular views of Perth’s city skyline from King’s Park, one of the world’s largest inner-city public parks, and only 1.5 kilometres from the heart of the city. Step out onto the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, weaving through towering karri and marri forest and the Western Australian Botanic Gardens, boasting over 3,000 species of native flora, including a giant 750-year-old boab tree from the East Kimberley region. Enjoy a coffee at the Botanical Café overlooking the Swan River and city or at Zamia Café overlooking the epic playground on May Drive.

Head to Elizabeth Quay offering a unique perspective of the city skyline from the Elizabeth Quay Bridge while admiring the Spanda, a sculpture representing the rippling Swan River. Stop for a treat at Gusto Gelato and let the kids burn off some energy at the BHP Water Park before heading up the Bell Tower for 360-degree views of the city and Swan River from the Observation Deck.

WA Museum

For lunch, stroll into Northbridge’s Chinatown for dim sum and then spend the afternoon strolling through the WA Museum Boola Bardip to discover WA’s rich history. Don’t miss the Stan Perron Gallery in the heritage-listed Hackett Hall to see the blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling and learn about the state’s diverse environment at the Wildlife exhibition.

Since you’re already in Northbridge, further explore this neighbourhood’s food scene from around the world for dinner, such as Sauma (Indian), Good Fortune Roast Duck House (Chinese), Uncle Billy’s Chinese Restaurant (Chinese), No Mafia (Italian) and Viet Hoa (Vietnamese).

London Court

With extra time in Perth’s CBD, you could:

• Explore Perth’s Hay Street and Murray Street malls, as well as the historic Tudor-style London Court, watching for the chiming clocks at the entrances on Hay Street and St George’s Terrace.
• While at Elizabeth Quay, join the Little Ferry Co for a round trip to East Perth and back. If you get off at East Perth, walk across the Matagarup Bridge to Optus Stadium. Or thrill seekers can brave a bridge climb or zipline over the Swan River from the bridge.
• The Barrack Street Jetty is part of the Elizabeth Quay precinct where you can join a cruise to the Swan Valley, Fremantle, Rottnest Island or a leisurely cruise along the Swan River.

Perth with Kids Itinerary Day 2 – Swan Valley

Western Australia’s first wine region, the Swan Valley, is about 25 minutes east of Perth’s CBD and is brimming with wineries, breweries, distilleries, restaurants, galleries and activities. The Swan Valley is also home to Caversham Wildlife Park, where you can cuddle a koala or a wombat, feed kangaroos and watch a farm show that includes sheep shearing.

The Swan Valley has a range of kid-friendly dining spots where you can spend the day sampling, including Bailey Brewing (which has an epic playground), the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, Maison Saint Honóre (famed for its macarons), Ugly Duckling Wines (also home to Stella Gelato Friday to Sunday and live music on the weekends), the Funk Brewshed, Txoko Brewing, and Oakover Grounds, which has aqua trikes and lawn games.

If time permits, browse the antique strip in historic Guildford and the Museum of Natural History -Academy of Taxidermy. While in Guildford, treat yourself at Mimmos Gelato and Alfred’s Kitchen, Perth’s longest-running roadside burger joint, where you can sit around the outdoor fire or in the train carriage.

With extra time in the Swan Valley, you could:

• Head over to The Vines Resort for 18 holes of mini golf before joining Perth’s only kangaroo safari aboard golf carts, where you’ll have the chance to mingle with a colony of kangaroos at sunset.
• Be kitted out with camouflage overalls for paintballing at Paintball Skirmish
• Visit the Swan Settler’s Market, where you’ll find plenty of produce from the Swan Valley under one roof, axe throwing, live music, kids’ activities and culinary events.

Perth with Kids Itinerary Day 3 – Fremantle

Located about 30 minutes west of Perth’s CBD, the port city of Fremantle is home to an eclectic mix of artists, bohemians and European flair. The UNESCO World Heritage City showcases 19th-century streetscapes housing pubs, galleries, museums, cafes and accommodation.

Embrace WA’s rich maritime history at the Shipwreck Galleries, where you can learn more about some of Australia’s oldest shipwrecks. The WA Maritime Museum is equally fascinating, so don’t miss the Submarine Ovens, a memorial to the submariners who lost their lives during WWII and the America’s Cup-winning yacht Australia 11.

Check out the 12-sided limestone Roundhouse, Australia’s oldest building, built in 1831, which offers a bird’s eye view over the Indian Ocean and Fremantle’s streetscape. It was a goal until 1886 with the construction of the Fremantle Prison, where you can take a day tour or, by night, visit the gruesome gallows and trek by foot and boat through the labyrinth of tunnels 20 metres below.

Head to Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour for fish and chips before boarding the Ferris wheel in Esplanade Park for a unique perspective of Fremantle, the Fishing Boat Harbour and the Fremantle Shipping Port.

Established in 1897 and built in a Federation Romanesque style, from Fridays to Sundays, the Fremantle Markets still attract visitors for over 150 stalls of art, jewellery, clothing, indigenous products, buskers, performance art, fresh produce and eateries embracing Fremantle’s multi-cultural community.

Hit the Cappuccino Strip on South Terrace and indulge in the Mediterranean lifestyle at the many cafes, including Gino’s, Benny’s Bar & Café, Ruocco’s Pizzeria, and the Capri Restaurant, one of the longest-running restaurants in Fremantle.

With more time in Fremantle, you could:

• Board the tall sail training ship Leeuwin for a day sail or an extended adventurous voyage on the high seas.
• Find out for yourself if the gothic-style Fremantle Arts Centre is haunted, built in 1864 by convicts as a lunatic asylum and is now a cultural centre.
• Located about 30 minutes by ferry from Fremantle, Rottnest Island is famed for its cute quokkas and stunning lagoons. The carless island offers diverse wildlife, walking and cycling trails, water sports, fishing, surfing, swimming, tours, a cute township and an array of dining and accommodation options.

Perth with Kids Itinerary Day 4 – The Pinnacles

Just 90 minutes north of Perth is one of the state’s most mysterious natural wonders. Situated in the Nambung National Park, The Pinnacles Desert contains thousands of limestone mounds in all shapes and sizes. While here, pop into the Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre to learn more about this intriguing phenomenon. Although beautiful in any season or time of day, visiting at sunrise or sunset is the ultimate way to experience the Pinnacles, so an overnight stay is recommended to make the most of your trip.

Make your way to the coast, where you will discover why this part of the state is called the Turquoise Coast. If time permits, head to Sandy Cape, about 13km north of Jurien Bay, for a powdery white beach and sand dunes ideal for sandboarding. Kangaroo Point and Hangover Bay are also popular beaches, and Hansen Bay Lookout offers coastal views. Don’t miss the Thrombolites at Lake Thetis to witness thousands of rocks rising up from the ground believed to be over 3,000 years old.

An anniversary treat with a view

As a local, whenever I’m searching for a staycation, a Perth hotel room with a view is often at the top of my list for a unique perspective of my hometown, especially for an occasion as special as our wedding anniversary. Pun intended as Subiaco’s cultural hub is as busy as a bee since Rokeby Road’s upgrades, Subiaco Farmers Market at Subiaco Primary School every Saturday, street art and the year-round performance line-up at the Subiaco Arts Centre and iconic Regal Hotel, in all its Art Deco glory.

As Subiaco’s only hotel, it’s hardly surprising occupancy is consistently high across 168 rooms and suites over nine floors, adorned with photographic artworks depicting Western Australia, including Perth, the Pilbara and the Kimberley. With a range of room configurations, including suites with living rooms, some with two beds and interconnecting rooms, the Vibe Hotel Subiaco caters well to couples and families.

Fluffy towels and robes (a must for fluffy towel travellers) are complimented by the contemporary décor, aromatic O&M products and spacious room sizes, which have the illusion of being even bigger thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows engulfing those views. As it was our wedding anniversary, the naughty treats in our room on arrival with complimentary water were a special touch. Sometimes the small things make all the difference, including late checkout at 11am, $15 parking per 24 hours, the onsite gym and rooftop pool, further defining this hotel as an urban retreat.

As someone who has worked remotely for many years, I appreciated the fast internet, work desk, USB charging points and in-room coffee machine as much as this Perth hotel room with a view. And given Perth’s CBD is only a couple of kilometres away, accessed by the free CAT bus, the Vibe Hotel Subiaco is an excellent option for business travellers who prefer city access without the hustle while staying in a cultural hub. The spacious lobby features multiple spots for meetings, even if you aren’t a guest, served by coffee, snacks and takeaways from St Marks Road Co. café. For something a little more formal, the conference rooms on level nine cater for up to 200 people across three separate rooms featuring a panoramic backdrop.

The crowning glory at the Vibe Hotel Subiaco is The Storehouse restaurant perched on the ninth floor with impressive and uninterrupted wraparound views of the metropolitan area punctuated by the city skyline and Kings Park’s green oasis.

Since we were celebrating, we went all out with the Chef’s Table. Full disclaimer, I’m not normally a fan of degustation menus because I’m not a big eater; however, this shared meal was the exception. Our feast began with charred sourdough with pistachio, ricotta and spinach dip before moving on to our entrees of beef tartare with potato flour crackers and Fremantle octopus. Remembering it was a marathon, not a race, the mains included gnocchi with mushrooms, Harvey Beef steak, salmon with a beetroot, pomegranate and tahini sauce, and roast potatoes with parmesan cheese and truffle mayonnaise. Before accepting defeat, I succumbed to the petite chocolate and raspberry tarts and the deconstructed apple and rhubarb crumble with black sesame sorbet.

I was grateful for the short commute to our cosy bed as a storm rolled in, who doesn’t love wild weather while tucked up in bed, especially on a Dreamcatcher mattress, striking the perfect balance between firmness and cloud-like softness.

Head chef Jonny Peacham is renowned for his Chef’s Dinners showcasing Western Australia’s outstanding produce. In a recent event, he paired Harvey Beef and Leeuwin Coast Akoya prepared five ways, accompanied by Margaret River wines in a first for Perth. A couple of years ago, I was lucky to attend an octopus extravaganza at The Storehouse, a meal that I still rave about today partly due to the food, lively atmosphere, and of course, those views enjoyed with the doors flung open on balmy nights.

Breakfast was equally decadent with the truffle mushrooms, poached eggs and sourdough. With a menu changing with the seasons, The Storehouse is busy throughout the year, particularly on the terrace during the warmer months and especially on New Year’s Eve for one of the best seats in Perth to witness the fireworks.

Rokeby Road, Subiaco

At some point, the streets below will beckon. You could browse all those boutiques at your feet or stroll to several parks to walk off the indulgence. However, you shouldn’t miss visiting Kings Park, the world’s largest inner-city park and Perth’s answer to New York City’s Central Park. Hovering over the CBD, enjoy a picnic while taking in the skyline, join a walking tour, navigate across a suspended treetop bridge and the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, stop and smell the banksias in the botanical gardens, book an outdoor performance or movie or let the kids go crazy in the playgrounds. During July 2023, marvel at Lightscape, where the trees and flora come alive at night in a twinkly wonderland.

Greens Pool…too beautiful to be believed

ANZAC Day commemorates Albany’s wartime role and presents a patriotic reason to further explore Western Australia’s Great Southern region.

The approach into Western Australia’s Great Southern region features weathered scrub bordered by the rugged peaks of the distant Stirling Ranges. It’s an idyllic scene, unchanged for more a million years. But over a century ago, peace was cruelly broken by the dramatic departure of Australian troops for Europe.

On 1 November 1914, the first convoy of Australian and New Zealand troops sailed from Albany to fight in the first World War. There were more than 40,000 men and 17,000 horses on 54 ships in two convoys, with the ships carrying up to four times as many men as they were originally built to transport. Many of the soldiers on-board would never return to Australia.

Today there is little sign of turmoil as holiday-makers flock to Western Australia’s Great Southern for adventure, culture, food, wine and relaxation. History is never forgotten though. To mark the anniversary, many make the four-hour journey south of Perth to honour ANZAC day with a driving holiday throughout the region.

Albany and the ANZACs

Our wartime heroes are remembered on ANZAC Day, 25 April when Albany honours their sacrifice and victory with ANZAC events, which include dawn and main service, events, afterall, Albany is the site of Australia’s first dawn service conducted by Padre White. If you’re in town, a visit to the National ANZAC Centre is a must. The state-of-the-art museum allows visitors to travel alongside the troops to Egypt, Gallipoli and the Western Front while interacting with touch-points and digital displays and a live web interface for the public to contribute their own stories.

WA’s Great Southern’s attractions

While the ANZACs may be the main focus, the Great Southern Region also has a fascinating social and indigenous history of its own. On your way to or from Albany take a sidetrip to Kodja Place visitor and cultural centre in Kojonup, 150km north of Albany, and experience “The Real Australian Story” with its poignant exhibitions, stories and artworks depicting the life of WA’s settlers, Indigenous community and migrants. In the heart of farming country, and home to vineyards and olive groves, the town also has some of the state’s oldest buildings.

Any journey to the Great Southern Region must also include a visit to the Great Southern Triangle. The peak of the triangle is Mount Barker, which extends south-west to Denmark and south to Albany. A renowned wine district, the triangle is famous for its Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz varieties. WA’s Great Southern’s natural beauty

Bushwalking and nature-loving enthusiasts will be drawn to the Porongurup National Park and Stirling Ranges (the only place to receive snowfall in the state) best reached from either Mt Barker or Kendenup (north of Mt Barker). Both mountain ranges have charming villages for petrol and food stops as well as galleries, accommodation and general stores.

The South Coast Highway heading towards Denmark and its sky-scraping karri forests feature untouched landscapes and a breathtaking coast. Follow the signs to Scotsdale Road and Mt Shadforth’s scenic drives. Wilson Inlet, Nullaki Peninsula and the Southern Ocean draw photographers attempting to capture this extraordinary natural environment.

Stand at WA’s most southerly point in West Cape Howe National Park before heading to William Bay National Park for the stunning Greens Pool and Elephant Rock. If staying in Denmark, the eco-certified Karma Chalets, the self-contained Pelicans at Denmark or hexagonal The Combe with unsurpassed views over Wilson inlet are all good options.

In and around Albany

Mt Clarence and the Princess Royal Fortress, built in 1893 as the first federal defence of Australia, is Albany’s highest point and affords a stunning view of the Sound. If you walk the gum-tree-lined Avenue of Honour on Apex Drive to the top of Mt Clarence, you’ll find the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial, which is a replica of the statue erected at Suez in 1932. Overlooking the Ataturk Channel, named in honour of ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli, stands a statue of Mustafa Kamal, A steel walkway leads up to where Rector Padre White stood in 1930 and held the first-ever observance of a dawn parade on Anzac Day.

Home to WA’s first European settlement, the protected waters of King George Sound are a wonderful place to explore both land and sea. On the southern coast of King George Sound, the site of the decommissioned Cheynes Beach Whaling Station, now named Discovery Bay, includes a museum highlighting Western Australia’s dark whaling history.

Natural Bridge and The Gap

At Torndirrup National Park, the power of the Southern Ocean is on display. The Gap and Natural Bridge are spectacular natural rock formations carved by the surging water. Pay particular attention to your safety as the 300-metre climb across the walkway over the rocks can be slippery with the spray from the surging and unpredictable waves.

Albany offers numerous accommodation options including the Dog Rock Motel, attached to one of the town’s finest restaurants Lime 303, or the cosy Beach House at Bayside and their hearty breakfasts and warm hospitality.

King George Sound

Towards Hopetoun

Heading east out of Albany towards Hopetoun, the remote and beautiful Great South West Edge region offers views of stunning coastal headlands, pretty inlets, mountains, valleys and wildflowers. Past Hopetoun towards Bremer Bay the Fitzgerald River National Park spans over 330,000 hectares and is home to over 1,800 plant species and wildlife. The opportunities are endless for photography, bushwalking, sand-dunning, canoeing, fishing and camping. Snorkel at Barrens Beach, whale-watch from Point Ann or go house-boating on the Hamersley Inlet. For impressive seascape and mountains views, hike up to Beacon Hill or look out to the Fitzgerald River National Park and Hamersley Inlet from Sepucralis Hill Lookout.

Not only is this pocket of the state’s expansive and dramatic landscape adorned with nature, adventure, culture, food and wine galore, but the land is steeped in history.

Few destinations offer such diversity and the Great Southern region of Western Australia makes for a glorious driving holiday.

Fast facts

Where: Denmark to Hopetoun lies within the Great Southern region and is best reached via the Albany Hwy, 360km south of Perth.

When: Summer temperatures reach 32 degrees and winters drop below 10 degrees. The wildflower season runs from August to November from Mt Barker all the way down to the coast from Walpole to Bremer Bay. May to early October is peak whale-watching season.

Distance: Denmark to Hopetoun is 389km; Perth to Denmark is 420km via Albany Hwy; Perth to Albany is 414km; and Perth to Hopetoun is 589km. The region can be enjoyed over a weekend, but there’s ample to do over several days, weeks or even months.

Originally built in 1968, the $45 million transformation in 2020/2021 included upgrades to its guest suites plus 32 new executive rooms, public areas including the grand lobby, executive lounge and Samuels on Mill restaurant. Evoking the hues of the Western Australian landscape, the lobby offers a sense of arrival reflective of the coast and desert composed of marble, timber, wool and leather balanced with bronze metals and glazing.

Leon Pericles’ Spirits Within

I’m particularly fond of the artwork including a mixed-media piece by Margaret River artist Leon Pericles titled Spirits Within. Honouring the land’s traditional owners to present-day generations, it’s a complex interpretation of a map of Western Australia. Also in the foyer and running along the main thoroughfare, the wood panelling carries on the theme of the desert and the coast depicting the different colours and regions of Western Australia shifting from the rich reds of the Kimberley to our coast’s turquoise.

Cox Architects worked in conjunction with Carr Design for the guestroom interiors. Our King Executive room offered a luxurious amount of space with a cloud-like King bed and plush robes to cosy up in. As we were in a corner suite, our bathroom had wrap-around windows frosted for privacy and the Crabtree & Evelyn products are always a welcome touch.

It was comforting to discover the Parmelia Hilton Perth participates in the Hilton CleanStay Program. Even the remote control for the 50-inch HDTV was wrapped and the door to our room had a security sticker and touchless digital key technology including a remote check-in service.

Winter Lights at Brookfield Place

The upgrades also included something unique to Perth. As part of the City Laneway revitalisation project, from the hotel, there is a direct thoroughfare to Mercantile Lane and Brookfield Place. This precinct is teeming with bars and eateries, and during our stay, the Winter Lights at Brookfield Place.

Samuels on Mill

Not that you need to go far for outstanding cuisine as the hotel’s Samuels on Mill delivers on that front with a menu showcasing some of the state’s best produce including Margaret River venison and Treeton Farm beef within its industrial glam walls. I always enjoy sampling dishes that I wouldn’t normally try to make at home, so we opted for the tasty house-made Duck Liver Parfait with red onion and ciabatta to share as a starter. The Fremantle Octopus with chorizo and romesco sauce took me back to the Mediterranean. The Scallops with cauliflower, bacon, walnuts, chive oil and pickled shemji was a refined playfulness of sweetness and nuttiness.

It was a hard choice between Western Australian wines and the innovative cocktail list. But who doesn’t love a bit of drama with a Salted Honey & Wattleseed Old Fashioned and the Samuel’s Smoked Negroni served in an intense cloud of Applewood Smoke? Mind you, we had already kicked off the night with canapes and cocktails in the Executive Lounge, which resembled a swanky airport lounge. We momentarily pretended we were about to board our flight off to some far-flung destination.

Instead, we made use of the easy access to Brookfield Place and its connection to the city. Our late-night stroll led us to a secret bar recommended to me by a friend who had joined a walking tour with Hidden deTours. At a non-descript entrance at 101 St Georges Terrace and down a staircase to a basement is where you’ll find the bar Foxtrot Unicorn. Hidden underground in an old bank vault and at the site of where the Western Australian Club once was, this jarrah-clad enclave is a mix of vintage decor and top-shelf wines and spirits. On the night we were there, the ever-changing menu included a Honeycomb Old Fashioned served with honeycomb and a green mango rum-based Columbian Neck Tie. Just as well there are jaffles and nibbles to see you through the night.

Many new hotels adorn Perth’s skyline and while the Hilton brand hardly needs any introduction, for me, it’s all about the warm and unpretentious service that makes all the difference. From the friendly front desk staff who offered us an even later check-out of 2pm to the concierge who chatted about the many local attractions while we waited for our car to be collected from valet parking. It’s all in the details.

As the most centrally located hotel in the CBD, Kings Park and Elizabeth Quay, their address is a unique selling point along with the Executive Lounge.

The next morning, I loved awakening to the hum of the city coming to life in new-day vitality. Breakfast was a lingering affair over the buffet at Samuels on Mill, named after Samuel Kingsford who built a flour mill in 1833 on Mill Street.

Okay, although not technically part of Western Australia, we’re claiming the Cocos (Keeling) Islands as they can only be reached from Perth within a few hours, and let’s face it, they are the very definition of paradise. Consisting of 27 islands, this tiny atoll in the Indian Ocean is about as remote as you can get, which is just the way you’ll want it with the perfect year-round water temperature of 28 degrees. The compact population of around 600 swells no more than 144 visitors as that’s all that can be accommodated at any one time across the cute bungalows, including the adults-only The Breakers and Seaward. Direction Island and Pulu Belan Madar have been named as two of the country’s best beaches by Tourism Australia for their snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, birdwatching, island hopping and undisputed beauty.

I’m always dreaming about escaping to a cabin in the woods…as long as the internet, wine, coffee and fluffy towels are in abundance. You mightn’t associate the tiny Katanning town located in the Wheatbelt with luxury. Each of the individualised 22 rooms is a moody industrial oasis and a throwback to the glory years as a profitable flour mill. Exposed timber walls, steel beams and vaulted open ceilings make for an unforgettable stay. The Old Mill Whistle once sounded for the workers and nowadays the whistle blows at midday as a celebration of heritage meets contemporary design. The boutique hotel houses a Dome café and the Cordial Bar in the basement, which was once used as a wine cellar and now serves cocktails, tapas and sodas – a delightful reminder of the original owner Frederick Piesse, whose vision transformed the town and manufacturing lemonade was just one of his many ventures. I’ve been dreaming of a romantic cabin in the woods for a long time – as long as it has fluffy towels, internet and good coffee. Situated in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, the Frankland River region delivers in spades along with plenty of wine, scenery and adventure.

Where to stay in Frankland River

The Frankland River Retreat fulfills the fantasy and more as it offers a three-bedroom Homestead brimming with character, a wooden Cabin reminiscent of an alpine hut and a stylish tiny home referred to as the Chalet. We opted for the Chalet as minimalist living has always intrigued me. I love the idea of being unincumbered while travelling – says the girl who rarely leaves home without a portable Nespresso machine.

The verdict? Compact and perfectly formed, the Chalet is ideal for couples as it features a kitchenette with a hotplate and a microwave, an open-plan living and dining area, a separate bedroom with a queen-sized bed and a well-appointed bathroom.

Facing the escarpment, the views of rolling paddocks down to the Frankland River running through the 83-acre property are spectacular, best enjoyed from the deck or from our bed. From our cosy chalet, we witnessed a star-studded performance of the sun and moon rising above the escarpment and the sun setting in the west. Given the isolation, the absence of any sky pollution made this natural phenomenon all the more spectacular.

A cup of sunshine

A stroll down to the Frankland River is a must accompanied by bouncing bunnies and cattle serenading you in the distance. During Spring, you’ll witness fields of wildflowers while during the wet season, the river flows fast enough to go kayaking.

Frankland River Wine

Since you’re in the heart of the Frankland River Wine Region producing some of the state’s finest varieties, it would be unthinkable not to visit at least one winery. This pristine cool-climate region produces stand-out cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, riesling and sauvignon blanc.

We visited in February when the wineries were preparing to close to the public during their harvest season for several weeks. But we did manage to visit Alkoomi Wines, and this third-generation family-run winery impressively sprawls for over 1200 hectares. The stylish tasting room serves flights and cheese boards, which you can also take away to enjoy from their boutique outlet. Or you can delve in deeper with a private tour of the farm and picnic among the region’s famed olive groves, the very source of their olive oil also available from the tasting room.

As this region is off the beaten track, it’s worth calling ahead for cellar door openings at some of the other wineries including Ferngrove Wines, Swinney Wine, Frankland Estate, Three Elms and Lange Estate Wines.

Where to eat in Frankland River

Apart from cheese boards compliments of the nearby wineries, in the township of Frankland River you can tuck into substantial counter meals at the Frankland River Country Club as well as sampling some of the local drops – I highly recommend Ferngrove’s Merlot with the Surf ‘n Turf. The Frankland River Café has a hearty menu and is a great place to stop for a light meal and a coffee.

If you’re going further afield, I highly recommend Gilberts Wines for a tasting and grazing plates or head into Mount Barker to Plantagenet Wines also for a wine tasting, platters and pizzas. Mt Barker is another wine region to explore for another time, but while you’re in town stock up at Plantagenet Meats known for their premium local meat and smoked goods – might be a good time to mess up the kitchen back at Frankland River Retreat.

Approximately 15-minutes east of Mount Baker is Porongurup, which isn’t just visited for trekking either as the village and surrounding vineyards serve food and wine.

On the drive to and from Perth, you’ll pass several roadside fruit and vegetable stalls from the family-run orchards the region is famed for. They’ll probably be unmanned but don’t let that put you off, as they operate on a help-yourself honour system.

Of course, an abundance of gourmet delights awaits in Albany, Denmark, Pemberton and Manjimup, if time permits.

Things to do in Frankland River

Porongurup

Clambering up to Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock is a must-do for the intrepid at The Porongurup National Park, which we will have to save for next time when the weather isn’t so extreme. However, more leisurely walks are suitable for any fitness level, including the ‘Tree in the Rock’ walk. Or take the 23km scenic drive leaving you more time to explore the local wineries, cafes, galleries and village – and to stop regularly for photo opportunities.

Stirling Ranges

Shrouded in clouds, the Stirling Ranges majestically hover in the distance on the approach into the Frankland River region and situated in the ranges, Bluff Knoll is one of Western Australia’s highest peaks reaching over 1,000 metres above sea level. Many have conquered its challenging peaks and the 6.8km return hike is Grade 4 and requires a reasonable level of fitness. It’s recorded as the only spot in WA to receive snowfall and is worth the exhilarating trek for the views, wildflowers and birdlife. Even the approach along the Horsepower Highway into the range is scenic passing by a 75 kilometre trail of vintage tractors, with each having a unique name and story to tell.

Gong Relaxation Session

Just in case you weren’t relaxed enough, get your zen on with a gong relaxation session at The Sandalwood Shop. As you lay within the 16-sided cone painted with celestial skies, you won’t be able to help but succumb to the gong vibrations while enveloped in the aroma of sandalwood.

Public Silo Trail

You can join the self-drive 1,000km Public Silo Trail from Frankland River in Katanning about an hour away. The painted silos featuring the artworks of local and international artists link six Wheatbelt towns including Northam, Merredin, Katanning, Pingrup, Newdegate, Ravensthrorpe and Albany. Witnessing the huge murals set against the everchanging landscape is a surreal experience. If you follow the trail, plan ahead and make sure you book your accommodation ahead of time so you don’t miss out on the boutique Premier Mill Hotel in Katanning, Mary’s Farm Cottages in Kukerin and the Beach House at Bayside in Albany. I can’t recommend the trail enough and here are 8 Reasons to follow WA’s Public Silo Trail.

Wildflowers

Every Spring, the Great Southern is ablaze with over 8,000 species of wildflowers, with more yet to be discovered. WA’s diverse range of wildflowers is thanks to our isolation, climate, pollinators and stability of the environment. They can be seen in all their glory in many national parks or you can join the experts on a tour or use the Wildflower Tracker App for up-to-date sightings.

Relax in Frankland River

One of the main attractions of Frankland River isn’t even the tourist attractions – it’s the utter sense of isolation and knowing you can do as little or as much as you like. Most stay at the Frankland River Retreat for the space, where gentle walks around the property, board games, reading and eating are the highlights. The scenery and peace are undoubtedly conducive to writing, painting, photography and creating.

Where is Frankland River?

Full disclosure, Frankland River is remote – it’s about an hour’s drive to Albany, Denmark, Manjimup or Mount Barker – yet, it is only three and a half hours south-east of Perth. However, it’s an ideal spot to base yourself for regional adventures. You can approach Frankland River along Albany Highway through Williams or Kojonup – check out the rose maze, gallery and café at Kodja Place in Kojonup or the café and shop selling wool products at the Williams Woolshed.

Or you can follow the picturesque route through pretty Boyanup, Balingup, Bridgetown and Donnybrook where you can stop for lunch, coffee, fresh produce and a browse along the main street for fashion and homewares. We stopped at the Cidery in Bridgetown where I was delighted to discover they have added a distillery to their cider and beer range. Their Grounded Gin combines 12 botanicals imparting citrus and floral notes and it was a refreshing treat served with crushed Geraldton wax and lemon.

Join us on a road trip from Albany to Denmark

A self-drive road trip from Albany to Denmark can take days or weeks, and that’s the beautiful freedom of a campervan, especially when there are plenty of caravan parks with powered sites to choose from. Equipped with a modern kitchen and a healthy appetite, we’re on a quest for marron, smoked trout, chocolate, free-range meat, honey, cheese, olive oil and the elusive truffle. Of course, there will be the pleasant distraction of Australia’s largest wine region, not to mention distilleries, breweries, cider factories and even a meadery.

Beautiful even in the rain

Albany is packed with gourmet outlets like Reeves on Campbell, Spencer Park Variety Meats, Solomon Merchants and Black Duck Gourmet Pantry. Farmers markets run weekends but for just-picked strawberries try Handasyde Strawberries. Just out of town in Middleton Beach is the Bay Merchants and Rats Bar and Due South overlooks Princess Royal Harbour.

Sure to enchant all ages and famed for succulent marron is Nippers Café at the Old Marron Farm, where there is also an animal farm and bird enclosure. Catch your own lunch at the Old Vasse Trout Restaurant and Marron Farm. Combine the outing with a Segway Tour through the farm and fields and you’ll have stretched those legs plenty before climbing aboard with a few clawed friends for tonight’s meal.

Moombaki Wines is just one of many wineries you’ll discover along the way.

Pick up a warming tipple like the Limeburners Single Malt Whisky from the Great Southern Distilling Company before hitting the Southern Coast Highway towards the picturesque town of Denmark.

Pop into Willoughby Park Winery for a spot of wine-swilling, the preservative-free ale at the Boston Brewery and for some hearty fare or varying degrees of grazing. For a caffeine hit in the township of Denmark try Ravens Coffee and sample the raw food menu. Or wander down to Darkside Chocolates for an infusion of chocolate with Australian bush flavours like lemon myrtle and native pepper.

Heading back onto the South Coast Highway visit Bartholomews Meadery for pure honey, mead and honey inspired crafts and gifts. The weather may demand a hot chocolate at Swiss Annies Fine Chocolates, not to mention the obscene chocolate menu. As if that wasn’t sticky enough, The Toffee Factory may just be your undoing and allow Elephants Rock Cider, also onsite, to cleanse the palette with the local flavours of apple, pear and strawberry.

Cruising the campervan along the scenic Scotsdale Drive is a visual feast as the enormous windscreen provides a panoramic view of the sweeping Jarrah and Marri trees. Stop off at Ducketts Mill Wines & Denmark Farmhouse Cheese for the makings of a decadent feast, especially the four-year-old gouda, and sample their preserves, fudge and ice-creams.

Does it get any tastier than this in Denmark?

Set in stunning scenery, The Valley of the Giants Organic Olive Oils has some of the country’s highest-ranking oils and olive products, and the success of their range can be attributed to the cool Mediterranean climate.

Elephant Rocks – can you spot the elephants?

While we’re on the subject, The Valley of the Giants is an ancient forest where you could lose yourself for days on end within its labyrinth and Treetop Walk. Nearby are beaches, inlets, falls, cliffs, wildflowers (from August to November) and walking trails, including the Bibbulmun Track, stretching 1000 kilometres from the Perth Hills to Albany. Park the campervan and do a section of the walk at any point of this journey. Or try and spot the elephants at Elephant Rocks and Greens Pool in William Bay National Park.

A truffle hunt at Manjimup’s Truffle Hill (from June to September) is a particularly exciting start to the day, especially when thousands worth of Perigords are uncovered by the champion dogs in a single hunt. Pick up some naughty delights where the prized ingredient is the star attraction. The intoxicating earthy aroma hits as soon as you enter the shop; resistance is useless.

With the smell of truffle lingering in your hair and clothes, take your time with a leisurely sojourn and stay overnight in Frankland River or Margaret River and continue to eat and drink your way through Western Australia’s fresh produce and wine.

Cruising through the Kimberley is the ultimate bucket list item for many West Australians. I took a sneaky peek onboard the boutique cruise company Kimberley Quest for a taste of luxury.

As the sun dipped into the Indian Ocean at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, casting peachy hues across the expansive horizon, the Kimberley Quest lived up to the hype. My main reference to luxury yachting has evolved from Bravo TV’s reality show Below Deck, where the crew’s misadventures often surpassed their cashed-up guest’s cruises through the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

After speaking to the crew on board, I’m pleased to report that guests of the Kimberley Quest experience none of the drama aired in this ‘unreal’ depiction of luxury yachting. The most dramatic event we experienced that night was when the vessel’s helicopter flew off into the sunset.

This sleek vessel is the most idyllic way to explore the many awaiting adventures of the Kimberley. Ancient Aboriginal rock art, rugged cliffs, secret river systems, wildlife galore, natural caves, hidden rainforests, pristine beaches, mighty waterfalls and breathtaking sunsets are just some of the sights you’ll get to experience onboard.

The cruising options are numerous, spanning from the four-day Taste of the Kimberley, which includes a Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm tour, to the extensive 21-day Beyond Adventure cruise for an epic voyage. Luxury aside, it’s the only way to explore the Kimberley as much of this remote region is only accessible from the coast with experts guiding the way.

Certified as an Advanced Eco-Tourism company, itineraries run from February to October. There will never be more than 18 guests on board with nine cabins, plus the professional crew to wait on you hand and foot and a local naturalist.

Discovering ancient rock art

The spacious cabins come in various configurations with ensuites, air-conditioning, quality linen and large viewing windows. Minimalistic in style, you don’t cruise the Kimberley to sit in your cabin, no matter how comfortable it is. However, they offer the perfect retreat for a bit of downtime.

While the helipad defines the pinnacle of luxury (what a way to make an entrance or exit), the spa, alfresco decks, outdoor dining, a widescreen plasma TV, extensive library, internet and open wheelhouse are available in between the excitement. Tender excursions include guided walks, fishing, swimming, fishing, discovering ancient rock art, speedboating, beaches, scenic heli flights,  humpback whale watching from July to September or exploring the underworld world.

As you’d imagine, food plays a big part in the experience and the menu features freshly caught seafood, some that you might have even caught yourself, as well as WA’s excellent fresh produce, including premium meat, freshly baked goods and decadent snacks. Caffeine addicts needn’t worry either, as there’s an espresso machine available at any time of the day or night, and the vessel is fully licenced; beverages can be pre-ordered or you can BYO tipples.

Ok, so let’s get down to the delicate matter of cost. Remembering this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many, and it’s all-inclusive (excursions, food, drinks and board), it works out to be around $1,000 per person per day. With 25 years of experience and countless awards and accolades, the Kimberley Quest offers the ultimate bespoke and unique adventures.

Now has never been the more perfect time to explore the unspolit wonders of the Kimberley. General Manager Clare Marquis said the last-minute availability was due to WA’s ongoing border restrictions, providing discerning West Australian travellers a rare opportunity, “Our tour schedule is usually sold out many months in advance, so it usually requires much forward planning.”
