• Go café and bar hopping, popping in wherever takes your fancy. I personally love Yuki for modern Japanese, Black Sand Brewery and Roomah Restaurant in your hotel.
• Enjoy the sunset on a beanbag at Batu Bolong Beach, Berawa Beach and Echo Beach
• Settle into a beach club for the day, as there are so many to choose from, including FINNS Beach Club, the boho-chic La Brisa and The Lawn, and you must experience at least one sunset at the Rooftop Pool Bar.
• Have you even been to Bali if you haven’t indulged in at least one massage or taken a yoga class?

Like a jewel dropped into the ocean, Sri Lanka sparkles bright. Tamer than its Indian neighbour, the spicy isle delights with culture, wildlife, gems, adventure, welcoming locals and exotic beauty every which way.

The figurative doors have flung open, and tourists are invited in as one might welcome a long-lost friend, or in this case, a young friend. You mightn’t have considered travelling to Sri Lanka with kids but read on, and you’ll soon wonder why you haven’t ventured to this tear-drop island before. Whether you opt for an independent trip or a customised tour with Soul Sri Lanka, the memories made will last long after you return home.

Accommodating restaurant owners cater well to your cherub’s exacting food requirements when travelling to Sri Lanka with kids. Often compared to Indian food, Sri Lankan curries use a wider spice base, less oil and a gentler cooking method to heighten the flavours. The secret is the freshness combined with a high standard of cleanliness ensuring safe eating for your beloveds. There are also excellent Italian restaurants, seafood just plucked from the ocean, plenty of Western and Chinese options, and if nothing else steamed rice, noodles and fresh fruit are healthy options for fussy eaters.

Beginning with the capital, and although Colombo seems like an unlikely family destination, it does have a certain charm about it. Built in 1877 and housed in an impressive colonial building, the Colombo National Museum is a fascinating starting point to Sri Lanka’s cultural history and the museum is on the south side of the city’s largest park, Viharamahadevi Park. Nearby is the air-conditioned One Galle Face Mall, offering upscale fashion, including fantastic children’s clothes.

More intrepid families will lose themselves in the Pettah Bazaar and its clothes, jewellery, Ayurvedic herbs and fresh produce, and it’s best to avoid the early morning and after-work crowds.

Gangaramaya Temple

There are temples galore and one in particular worth exploring is the Gangaramaya Temple complex, which was established in 1890 and includes a library, museum, hundreds of Buddha’s sitting in various positions and a Bodhitree.

The elegant Galle Face Hotel makes the most of its westerly direction offering its guests crimson sunsets and high tea and cocktails. Take a break from the heat and relax like the colonials on the cool terrace and lawned area. In the adjacent wing is the refurbished Galle Face Regency with a salt-water pool open to the public for a small fee. When the sun sets in spectacular fashion, the neighbouring Galle Face Green heaves with families and street food for a local experience.

Mt Lavinia Hotel

For more epic sunsets, the swanky Mount Lavinia Hotel in the expat and family-friendly neighbourhood of Mt Lavinia, charges a small fee for pool access, but the spectacular views and beach are free. North of Colombo is the charming beach town of Negombo with several very good hotels and guesthouses, an old quarter and an interesting fish market.

Heading much further north is the Cultural Triangle and although the dusty ancient ruins of Anuradhapura (showcasing Sinhalese culture 2,000 years ago), Polonnaruwa (the former medieval capital), and Sigiriya (palace remains on top of a huge outcrop) may not hold the kids’ attention span for long, a safari will.

Minneriya National Park and Kaudulla National Park are in the region and host herds of elephants, deer, sloth, bears, abundant bird life, monkeys and the elusive leopard.

The hill town of Kandy is included in the Cultural Triangle and can be reached by a scenic train ride from Colombo.  Listed as a World Heritage City and hosting the Tooth Relic of the Buddha, Kandy is famous for its Kandyan dancing and drumming, and for 10 days over the months of July and August is the procession of Kandy Esala Perahera to honour the sacred tooth. The procession includes thousands of Kandyan drummers, dancers and decorated elephants; surely a sight your beloveds will remember for many years to come

If time permits on your Sri Lankan adventure take a jaunt over to the tea plantations of Nuwara Eliya. As the mist lifts, green tea bushes weave over rolling hills and you could almost imagine you’re starring in your own Dilmah Tea T.V. advertisement. The mild temperature is a cool reprise from the flats and a night or two in a colonial hotel or converted tea-house is an escape from the maddening pace. Before heading to the south coast, break up the arduous journey at the pretty town of Ella and its stunning views through Ella Gap, temples and waterfalls.

The south coast awaits with its idyllic beaches, outstanding restaurants, and relaxing pace.

It won’t be hard to spot the foreigners who came for a visit and couldn’t bear to leave. The hippy surf town of Unawatuna hugs the coast and when you’re back home, don’t be surprised to find yourself longing for this spot. Restaurants and bars dot the palm-tree lined shore as locals and visitors alike frolick in the waves. Young families should head for the area beneath the temple where the currents aren’t as strong. Nearby are the quieter but equally gorgeous beaches of Tangalla, Weligama and the exquisite Mirissa.

A few kilometres west is the picturesque fort town of Galle and its Dutch-colonial buildings, artisans and its tres chic reputation. Unlike most of this region which was devastated by the tsunami, the fort was unscathed and a wander through its winding streets will enchant.

As the end draws near, the journey back to Colombo can be broken up with a visit to one of the turtle hatcheries in Kosgoda. See if you can pick the five different species of these cute critters? Spot the green, olive ridley, hawksbill, leatherback and loggerhead turtles make their perilous journey back to the water; much as you prepare for the journey back to reality. P.S. The Sheraton Kosgoda Turtle Beach Resort next door to the turtle hatchery has one of the best buffets I’ve seen in Sri Lanka (and that’s saying something), an epic pool and direct beach access.

Sri Lanka with Kids: The Lowdown

After surviving the 25-year civil war and the tsunami that devastated much of its south, Sri Lanka is a country of resilience.

Transport: Apart from the roads in the south, which were rebuilt after the tsunami, many are in poor condition or are in the process of being upgraded. As a result, the traffic is hard going, time-consuming and, at best, invigorating. Always allow more time than you think you will need, use a recommended driver and inspect the vehicle (particularly for working seatbelts) before negotiating rates.

Tuks-tuks: A fun way to travel short distances, and hang on tight. Check out the decorations inside, including the tame pin-up posters, and take the time out to listen to the driver’s tales.

Military: There is a military presence, and the frequent sight of guns can be a little alarming, and there are occasional vehicle inspections.

Heat: The humidity is energy-zapping, and the sun is harsh. Don’t forget your sunscreen, cover up and rehydrate regularly. On the upside, the kids will be pleasantly exhausted and will sleep soundly; as will you.

Beach: The tidal currents are strong, and the provision of lifeguards hasn’t exactly caught on yet, so always take care at the beach and if in doubt, ask the locals.

Health: Sri Lanka is very clean, however consulting with a doctor before leaving home is highly recommended. The chemists and supermarkets are well stocked with medicines but may not have familiar brands. Clinics can be variable and consult with your consulate on the best treatment.

Utilities: With regular power outages, the air-conditioning and refrigeration are unreliable and water pressure is low.

Accommodation: There is a wide range of accommodation options, but it can be hit and miss and it’s advisable to do your research.

Insects: The mosquitos are brutal and insect repellent is essential.

Pace: Time moves very slowly in Sri Lanka and while this is part of its charm, the little ones might not understand why their lunch is taking so long. Be prepared for long waits in restaurants, at monuments, when touring and shopping.

If you’re travelling from Australia, there are direct flights with Sri Lankan Airlines from Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Hopefully, Perth will be added to the route soon, but in the meantime, you can fly via Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

The prospect of a flatbed on a long-haul overnight flight made the moments leading up to departure just a little more exhilarating. After a quick gin and tonic and a selfie with the quokka in the Aspire Lounge, my good fortune became all the more real when turning left instead of right from the airbridge for a sneak peek of the cabin before the other guests boarded our ANA (All Nippons

My seat was everything I could have hoped for; a fully reclining flatbed with a mattress topper, a cosy blanket and a plush pillow promised a good night’s sleep that I desperately needed. The next day, I knew I’d hit the ground running with a connecting flight to Haneda followed by an afternoon and evening of activities in Matsuyama, the capital of the Ehime Prefecture.

But for the time being, I intended on making the most of this luxurious flight, the latest movies and TV shows on the 18-inch touch screen (with provided noise-cancelling headphones) and the gourmet food that ANA and Japan are renowned for.

In Business Class, the 787-9 Dreamliner features staggered seats where every seat has direct access to the aisle, and the middle seats have privacy screens and do not disturb signs. A large side table with a light, and USB and power ports complemented a pull-out table, so there was no shortage of flat surfaces. Storage under the ottoman was roomy but difficult to access when the seat was fully reclined, requiring me to be organised before tucking myself in for the night, not that I had any intention of rummaging around in my bag once snuggled up.

Okay, I’m going to sound like a bit of a princess now. I love a soft mattress, and so do my hips and back. It has to be noted that the seat was on the firm side. Most of the mattresses in Japan are hard, so the firmness of the airline seat wasn’t entirely surprising. In hindsight, I should have asked for an additional mattress topper to soften my journey.

Most hotels in Japan include a set of freshly laundered pyjamas, as do ANA if you request to borrow a set on board. Although you must return the pyjamas, you can keep the amenity kit containing lip balm, body lotion and a tote bag.

One other thing worth noting is the seat configuration of the 1-2-1 layout. I was in seat 8E, in the middle and in front of the toilet, which is convenient for nocturnal ablutions, but it was a trade-off whenever the toilet flushed throughout the night. Speaking of the toilet, it was kept immaculate and odour-free throughout the flight and was well-stocked with toiletries, including an endless supply of towelettes, toothbrushes and toothpaste to keep you fresh. If I ever had the fortune of flying business class again with ANA, I would choose a window seat closer to the front of the plane. But I really am nit-picking here.

The menu offered a choice of Japanese and International meals, when in Rome I chose Japan, with sake of course. However, the Western meal looked delicious, too, with a beef fillet steak and a caramel chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce.

After a white tablecloth was laid out on my table, the meal tray arrived with an assortment of Japanese delicacies. Starting with Zensai (a selection of morsels), which consisted of Simmered Taro with Minced Chicken Sauce, Deep-fried Shrimp with Cornflakes, Cheese wrapped with Smoked Salmon and a Simmered Tokobushi Abalone in a Soy-based Sauce. Yes, you read that right; abalone was on the menu. The next course of Kobachi (tasty tidbits) was my favourite, with Tuna and Green Onion with Mustard Vinegar Miso, where the acidity of the mustard vinegar elevated the flavour of the tuna. The main dish (Shusai) was Salt-grilled Salmon with Steamed rice, Miso Soup and Japanese Pickles, and a Baked Yuzu Confectionery for dessert (Kanmi). Although this meal was substantial, I didn’t feel bloated at all – I simply love the lightness of Japanese cuisine.

After several hours of sleep, we were gently woken by the lights subtly being turned up to announce the arrival of breakfast. I chose the Japanese option again of a Scallop and Daikon Radish with Yuzu Sauce, followed by Simmered Pork and Cabbage in White Miso with Steamed Rice. Yum, yum, yum.

At this point, I realised we only had an hour left onboard. Usually, I’d be eager to get offboard, but this was not the case. I didn’t want the flight to end. I still had to work my way through And Just Like That. Or I could have diligently caught up on some work as Wi-Fi was offered, and although I didn’t try it out, a colleague mentioned that the download speed was 16.9 Mbps and 5.12 Mbps for uploads.

Before I knew it, I was propelled into Tokyo’s International Airport, excited to start the day of exploration ahead.

ANA flight review – Economy class flight NH881 Tokyo to Perth

After a whirlwind of a trip in Japan in the Ehime and Hiroshima Prefectures and a fleeting few hours in Tokyo, I was ready to relax for 9 ½ hours on the return flight to Perth. From Narita Airport in Tokyo, the check-in process was seamless with the face express check-in and self-bag drop-off machines. Yet, another example of Japanese efficiency.

As check-in had gone so smoothly, I had plenty of free time to browse the shops and sample some of the best ramen (you’d never have guessed it was vegan from the flavour) I’ve ever had with a double espresso for breakfast.

When I had preselected my aisle seat, I noticed I had the entire row to myself. After receiving an upgrade on the way over, surely, I wouldn’t be so lucky on the journey home. But luck was on my side, and even before take-off, I was snuggled up by the window with two seats to stretch out on. Bliss.

The legroom was impressive, and had I not travelled over on Business Class, I suspect I would still have been very comfortable with the 34-inch seat pitch, footrest and adjustable headrest. Once again, the seat was firm but nothing that a cushion couldn’t fix, especially as I had three to choose from with the entire row to myself.

After a week of Japanese food, I thought I’d try the Western meal on the return home instead of the Japanese meal of Chicken & Eggs over Steamed Rice. The Hashed Beef Stew in Red Wine was rich and delicious and served with Steamed Chicken and Pumpkin Salad with Ponzu Gelèe, a Vegetable Namul (Kobachi), a mixed salad, cheese and crackers and vanilla Hàagen-Dazs Ice Cream. Dinner was light and included a panini, fruit salad and yoghurt.

Although I was very happy with my meal, there is the option to upgrade to Paid Exclusive Dining in advance. The meals vary, and had I done this for $25, I would have chosen the beef steak with all the trimmings. Something to look forward to next time I fly with ANA.

I spent the flight eating, dozing, reading and binging on all those movies on the 9-inch touch-screen monitor I’ve been meaning to watch, such as Fly Me To The Moon and Ezra (I highly recommend both), and of course, I resumed And Just Like That.

Once again, the flight ended way too fast, and my transition through Perth Airport was so smooth that I was home within the hour.

I hope you enjoyed this ANA flight review. Overall, both flights took me back to a time when flying felt special. The warm staff was always ready with a smile and provided wonderful service. The cutlery was real, the inflight entertainment was exceptional, and the food was plentiful and tasty. The roomy seats enhanced the experience, and everything was included on this full-service airline. Budget airlines certainly have their place in the market for short jaunts, but for a long-haul flight, I’d never scrimp on the flight as there isn’t a price you can put on arriving refreshed.

For me, ANA is a return to the glory days of travel, where the flight is part of the journey.

ANA flights between Perth and Tokyo

ANA resumed their non-stop flights from Perth to Tokyo on 29^th October 2024. Flying three times a week on Monday, Thursday and Saturday between Perth and Narita, the route is set to add approximately 17,000 passengers over a five-month period to March 2025. Not only does this open up the destination of Japan to Western Australian travellers, but it also makes WA more appealing to travellers from Japan and boosts the tourism and hospitality sector.

As a Star Alliance member, flights with ANA can be booked using Velocity Points, but if you’re flying on a paid ticket, you can earn Velocity Points and Status Credits.

ANA flies domestically and internationally to Asia, Perth, Sydney, the US and Europe.

Rainforest World Music Festival, Sarawak

I loved the Rainforest World Music Festival so much that I attended it in twice, in 2023 and 2024. Held in Sarawak, Borneo, about an hour from the capital in Kuching at the Sarawak Cultural Village on the Damai Peninsula, 2024 celebrated the 27^th anniversary. As the name suggests at one of the most unique music festivals in Asia attracts artists from around the world, ranging from Cuban percussionists to an acrobatic act from Tanzania, to a rock band from the Maldives to the didgeridoo played to the backdrop of Balinese drums – the element of surprise is what makes this festival so eclectic reverberating around one of the oldest rainforests on earth.

Highlight: I’ve been a fan of the Gipsy Kings for as long as I can remember, so not only seeing them perform at the 2023 RWMF but also meeting them was one of those pinch-me moments.

This 16-day art festival is one of its kind in Australia, where over 140 artists open up their studios and invite the public in for a unique perspective of their process of painting, pottery, printmaking, sculpting and photography, and a few unexpected surprises. The Margaret River Region Open Studios (MRROS) spans across Busselton, Dunsborough, Cowaramup and Margaret River. Running for the 11^th year, the only problem is deciding who to visit with so many artists, events and talent. Jacksons Drawing Supplies and regional visitor centres are the best spots collect your guide or head to the website. Also in Western Australia’s Margaret River Region, the CinefestOZ film festival showcases over 80 films, star-studded premieres and events at iconic locations across the region. Genres range from drama, comedy, horror and documentaries, and you just never know who you could be seated next to in the cinema or rubbing shoulders with at the gala night or closing party. As if there weren’t already many reasons to visit the Margaret River Region, attending CinefestOz is just one more reason to visit during spring, which also runs in Broome (24-27 Oct) and Albany. Purchasing a Cinepass gives you access to discounts and multiple screenings or you can go all out and purchase a Platinum Cinepass for optimum hob-nobbing opportunities. The KITA Food Festival returns for the fourth time to Kuala Lumpur 4^th – 8^th September with some of the biggest names in the culinary world across Southeast Asia and Australia. I’ve planned at least two holidays to Sri Lanka to attend the Galle Literary Festival, which runs on the south coast in the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort and surrounds. As one of the most anticipated festivals in Asia since its establishment in 2007, you could be sharing a meal with legends like Candace Bushnell, Dame Maggie Smith and Richard Dawkins. With a tagline of “A harbour of discovery, where tales arrive on tides,” literary lunches and dinners, gourmet events, art trails, live performances, parties and book readings set within this magical tear-shaped isle are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.

Highlight: Meeting Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell on Taprobane Island, who was the guest of honour at the Sex in a Sarong party was a night to remember. Deemed the cultural and spiritual heart of Bali, this Ubud itinerary includes many of my favourite things to do in one of my most beloved destinations on earth. Mother Nature has truly outdone herself in this part of the world where beauty engulfs you every which way, further enhanced by local craftsmen bestowing their talents from art to architecture. When you head to Ubud’s hills, you’ll forget all about the chaos of the flats as there’s a distinct energy in the air that rejuvenates and invigorates, drawing me back time and time again.

I didn’t design this Ubud itinerary to fill every moment of every day, although there certainly are enough attractions to keep you busy. Instead, I recommend you take it slow and settle into the languid pace that the locals have mastered, partly due to the humidity and the fact that things take longer in this exquisite part of the world.

Allow yourself the indulgence of doing less, taking it slow and taking a break from life as you know it. This is a journey of rejuvenation and relaxation.

Getting my ducks in a row along the Sari Organic Trail

Ubud Itinerary Day 1: Rural vistas

Let’s get an early start to avoid the midday sun and stretch those legs on the Sari Organic Walk. Spanning 3.5km through rice paddies and clusters of villas and cafes, you can do as much or as little of the walk as you wish. The trail is fairly easy and flat, with most of the path in good condition. The only challenges were the heat, as we mistakenly started too late in the day, and a few motorbikes to navigate, more so at the beginning of the trail.

This walk is one of my favourite things to do in Ubud. I could easily spend the day admiring the scenery, stopping at the many cafes and galleries and treating myself to a yoga session and massage. Along the way, you’ll encounter the locals going about their day, as well as couples, families and solo women. I always for a fresh coconut from the stalls, and I’m a big fan of the coffee and views at Dragonfly Café, which is part of Dragonfly Village, where you can stay, join a workshop or embrace the heat with a session in the sauna. No doubt you’ll discover your own favourites on the trail, such as the gorgeous The Rice Joglo, Trinity Gardens and Molecha Organic Warung.

The Sari Organic Walk is on Jalan Subak Sok Wayah, and can enter off Jalan Raya Ubud, one of the main arterial roads into Ubud. The trail is most built-up at this end, and if you make it to the end, you’ll pop out on Kelabang Moding, where we stopped for lunch at The Pengkolan Warung, serving a mix of light western and local dishes. The Pyramids of Chi is a short walk away, which intrigues me for its healing and wellness sessions, and maybe next time, I’ll indulge in sound healing or guided meditation ceremonies.

Ubud Itinerary Day 2: Relax

By taking the beach club concept into the hills, Ubud makes the most of its jungle setting to create swoon-worthy day clubs. Whether you book an all-inclusive experience or just pop in for a cocktail and the views, you’ll enter another level of beauty. Cretya, Wanna Jungle Pool and Bar, and Tis overlooking the iconic Tegalalang Rice Terraces live up to the hype.

I love Omma Dayclub because there are many places to lounge, including quiet corners to chill or join all the action around the infinity pool with a waterfall backdrop. What really sets Omma apart for me is the nearby Tegenungan Waterfall, only a stroll away, where you can take a dip or fill your Instagram feed with stunning shots. Of course, there’s a swing (no self-respecting tourist attraction in Southeast Asia is without one these days), a fantastic menu, a temple and live entertainment. Omma has free entry, but there is a minimum spend depending on which package you book, ranging from poolside dining and day beds to VIP lounges offering pool and waterfall access and free welcome drinks and canapes. Regardless of which one you choose, I recommend arriving early to make the most of the facilities and vistas before it gets too busy.

Ubud Itinerary Day 3: Explore

The township of Ubud perpetually bustles, especially around the corner of Jalan Raya Ubud and Jalan Suweta, where you’ll find the Ubud Art Market, Ubud Palace and the Pura Taman Kemuda Saraswati. The Ubud Art Market was recently upgraded and is a treasure trove of hand-crafted goods, homewares, clothes, bags and souvenirs, where haggling with local store holders is all part of the experience. There are plenty of air-conditioned boutiques nearby, as well as the Ubud Street Market on Jalan Karna behind the art market, which offers endless opportunities for more haggling.

Located across the road from the art markets, I recently visited Ubud Palace for the first time and I’m not sure why it took me so long to visit this temple complex. Originally built in the early 1800s in the traditional Balinese style of architecture with traditional stone carvings by local artisans, it was restored after the 1917 earthquake. The grounds host traditional Balinese dance shows, which I have added to my list for my next visit. The royal family still live in the complex and, with free entry, go early to avoid the crowds.

Ubud Palace

You’ve no doubt seen the photos of the lotus pond in front of the Pura Taman Saraswati, but it’s not until you’re standing in front of it that you appreciate the beauty of this temple designed by renowned architect I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, who was also instrumental in the design of the Ubud Palace. Saraswati Ubud Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu Goddess of knowledge, literature and art – no wonder I’m always drawn to this temple. Balinese dance performances at night attract a fee paid to Café Lotus next door. Although I haven’t tried it myself, I’ve heard it’s a magical experience as the twinkling lights reflecting off the pond add to the ambience of the performance.

Ubud Monkey Forest

I’ve been coming to Bali for decades, and I can finally say I have now visited the famous Monkey Forest. Covering 12.5 hectares, this natural sanctuary is home to over 1200 long-tailed macaque monkeys perpetually up to mischief. Some rules include avoiding looking them in the eye, not having food or hiding it, and not having anything in your hand they might be interested in grabbing. With so many photo opportunities, it’s hard not to have your phone out, especially when they’re doing bombies in the pond during bathtime.

Ubud Itinerary Day 4: Cultural Fix

Dedicated to Vishnu, the Hindu God of water, Tirta Empul Temple is just a few minutes from Ubud. Considered one of the holiest springs, locals and visitors flock here for water blessings and purification beneath the spouts. Even if you don’t partake in a water blessing, visiting the complex is a contemplative experience.

A few minutes away in Batuan Village, you’ll witness artists depicting daily life and rituals through their intricate paintings. Any purchases you can’t resist will be shipped home. Nearby, the next generation of artists practice their craft at the Keliki Painting School, famed for teaching the signature Keliki art style in detailed ink and acrylic paints.

After such a wholesome morning, it’s time to visit Naughty Nuri’s. This rustic street-side barbeque joint has been grilling pork ribs and satays over a grill for decades. Many a meal and deal has been struck at this local and expat meeting spot over lethal martinis, made even more famous when Anthony Bourdain declared them the best martinis in the world. You will probably need a lie-down after this.

Visiting a day spa in Ubud is a must

With more time in Ubud:

• Campuhan Ridge Walk: This 2km walk is one of the most popular. Although picturesque, some views from the elevated path are obstructed by overgrown vegetation. If you start from the north, most of it is downhill, and getting an early start in the day will help avoid the heat and crowds.
• Blanco Renaissance Museum: Dedicated to artist Antonio Blanco in his former mansion-studio, and now his son Mario, he was awarded for his portraits of beautiful Balinese women and the island landscapes and was one of the most prolific expat artists to live in Bali.

Tegallalang Rice Terrace

• Tegalalang Rice Terraces – There’s a reason this valley of rice terraces is one of the most photographed spots in Ubud. You can hike down or channel your inner influencer, don a flowing gown, and ride the swing over the Ayung River valley.
• Petulu Village – Every day at dusk, thousands of white cranes descend on Petulu Village in spectacular fashion and fly away the following morning. If you arrive around 5pm, you will witness this spectacle and ponder on the myths that the herons represent the souls sacrificed in the massacre of 1965 or that the herons answer the villager’s prayers for peace.
• Day spa: Day spas practically line the streets in Ubud and most hotels also have plenty of pampering in sublime settings. I recommend Akoya Spa (Viceroy), Taksu Spa, Bali Botanica and the Five Elements Spa on the banks of the Ayung River.

Naughty Nuri’s: All other ribs and satays maybe ruined for you once you’ve tasted them at Naughty Nuri’s.

Warung Babi Gulung: With three outlets in Ubud, there’s much debate over which one serves the best suckling pig. I’m a fan of Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka 3 because it’s the quietest, but why not decide for yourself.

Dirty Duck Diner: Serving the original crispy duck since 1990 and set among the rice paddies, duck is just one of the Balinese specialties on the menu.

Honey & Smoke: This wood-fired bistro is the brainchild of chef Will Meyrick – everything I tried was outstanding. But if a trip to Ubud isn’t on the cards and you’re in Perth, check out his Will St. restaurant in Leederville

Uma Cucina: If you’re craving something other than Indonesian food, Uma Cucina at the Como Uma Ubud serves some of the best Italian food on the island.

Dragonfly Café: Located on the Sari Organic Trail and set within the Dragonfly Village, Dragonfly Café serves delicious coffee and vegetarian and vegan food overlooking rice paddies.

How to get to Ubud:

Jetstar, Citilink and Air Asia fly into Denpasar Airport and Ubud is about an hour’s drive with Grab or request your accommodation to organise a transfer.

Getting around Ubud: Unless you’re a confident motorcyclist, I don’t recommend hiring a motorbike. Instead, use Grab to get around or organise a driver for the duration of your journey. And don’t ever leave home without travel insurance as you just never know when a monkey is going to steal your phone, or worse.

On a recent trip to Kuala Lumpur, I was incredibly lucky to fly on Malaysia Airlines Business Class. My indulgent journey started from the moment I checked in at the Perth Airport, and it was one of the few times I didn’t want the flight to end. My return flight home was even more decadent with a massaging flatbed – I’m now left wondering how I will ever return to the economy after experiencing such magic at the pointy end of the plane.

Perth to Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia Airlines Business Class B737-800

My flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur was at a very civilised 4.15 pm. Although I didn’t have the pleasure of a priority Business Class check-in counter, as the Perth Airport mainly uses self-check-in kiosks, the process was seamless. Within moments, I was sipping on a gin and tonic in the viewing deck in the Aspire Lounge, watching the planes land and take off with the city skyline in the distance. Naturally, I had to have the obligatory selfie with the resident quokka.

I flew on the B737-800 to Kuala Lumpur in a 2-2 seat formation with a total of 16 Business Class leather seats. I chose seat 4D because I prefer an aisle seat, and it was in the back row of the section, meaning I could lean my seat back and stretch out with the leg rest and foot bar without annoying anyone behind me or in front thanks to the additional legroom.

Champagne and a cool towel were offered before take-off while enjoying the quirky safety video with a star-studded cast of entertainers; you can watch it here. Once the curtain between business and economy class was pulled shut, I really started to feel special, especially when the white tablecloth was placed on my pull-out table, along with glassware, polished cutlery, white crockery, tiny salt and pepper shakers, warm bread rolls, and a menu, resembling a restaurant experience in the sky.

Then the satays were served, and I made a complete pig of myself as they were probably the best thing I’ve ever eaten on a plane. The secret to their tastiness is the use of high-grade beef, chicken and lamb marinated into a special spice base, and then basted and hand-turned over a chargrill and served with traditional crushed peanut sauce. Malaysia Airlines has been serving these satays since 1973, so it’s safe to say they have mastered the art.

As a spectacular sunset unfolded, Seared Tuna was served, followed by a choice of Hainanese Chicken Rice, Braised Beef Brisket or Stir-Fried Hokkien Noodle. It’s pretty rare that I’d like to try everything on a menu, but this was the exception, and I narrowed it down to the Hainanese Chicken Rice, my second favourite thing I’ve eaten on a plane.

The gin and tonics just kept coming well into the dessert of White Chocolate Passion Fruit Mousse, which was also delicious. Then, it was time to settle in with a movie, The Miracle Club, followed by re-runs of Friends. I honestly could have comfortably remained on board for a long-haul flight, but before I knew it, we began our descent into Kuala Lumpur’s International Airport. After landing, I was ushered to a special lounge with a dedicated bus and an attendant to help with my belongings before whisking me off to collect my luggage.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Kuala Lumpur, and it’s such an easy city to visit whether you’re on your own, there on business or a family holiday. Joining a night food tour on a Vespa with Vespalicious was the highlight for me, as I visited places I’d never been to before despite having visited the Malaysian capital many times. I appreciated the central location and my spacious room at the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur, particularly the comfy king bed, walk-in closet, well-appointed marble bathroom, extensive breakfast buffet and 24-hour room service.

While in Kuala Lumpur, I attended the MATTA (Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents) Fair 2024, where the partnership between Malaysia Airlines and Manchester United was announced along with the new flight routes to the Maldives, Da Nang and Chiang Mai, and free side trips to Peninsular Malaysia. I also sampled the upcoming new seats in first, business and economy classes on the new A330neo aircraft. You can read all about it in my post here.

Soon enough, it was time to return home to Perth. I excitedly checked-in at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at the dedicated Business Class counter D, where my luggage was heavier than when I left (how can you not shop in KL?)  but was still nowhere near the 40kg baggage limit. There is also a dedicated immigration counter for business and first class passengers before a private chauffer with massaging seats whisked me off to the Golden Lounge, where the buffet offered a range of Malaysian dishes, snacks, fruit and cheese with chefs on hand regularly topping up the dishes.

There was also a dedicated bar, large powder rooms and a napping lounge, although, with the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the runway from the main lounge, I’m not sure I’d be sleeping with that view to keep me entertained.

After all, my massaging flatbed was waiting onboard. The luxurious 350-900 features a high ceiling and loads of space in the cabin with a 1-2-1 or 1-2-2 seat configuration. All 35 seats in Business Class have aisle access, and I chose 6D as all the single seats with window and aisle access were already booked. A bag compartment with a mirror, phone holder, reading light, coat hook, bottle holder, charging point, and 16-inch high-definition screens enjoyed from the extra-wide seats was a joy.

I was thrilled when the satays made another appearance on the return flight, and they were just as delicious the second time around. Smoked Salmon Rolled with Cream Cheese followed, and for the main course, there was a choice of Chicken Masala, Grilled Beef Medallion (which I opted for), or Asam Pedas Ikan Merah (red snapper stew). The Onde Cake with a mixed berry compote was a sweet way to end the dinner service as I prepared for bed as this was a late-night flight.

Once my seat with pneumatic cushions reclined almost flat into the void in front, and I hit the massage button, I snuggled up under the cosy blanket and was rocked to sleep all the way home to Perth. My only criticism was that the flight wasn’t longer.

The service continued after I landed as my luggage was given priority and was one of the first suitcases to appear on the conveyor belt. I was equally thankful for the efficiency of the Perth Airport, and since I only live a 15-minutes away, I was home and in bed within moments – it was as though my sleep had only been momentarily interrupted.

Overall, I completely understand why you would splurge on Malaysia Airlines Business Class for the attentive service, quality of the food and seats, and standard of comfort. If money was no object, the level of luxury far outweighed the cost, as I’d arrive refreshed and ready for action the moment I landed, which is priceless, in my opinion.

I was a spoiled guest of Malaysia Airlines and the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur.

What do Manchester United, free travel and new flight routes have in common?

On a flying visit to Kuala Lumpur, compliments of Malaysia Airlines, I discovered that the country’s premier airline is proudly responsible for this incredible trifecta.

I had the enviable task of reviewing the Malaysia Airlines A330 Business Class. Here is my flight review of Malaysia Airlines Business Class, but I will reveal in the meantime that the massaging and fully reclining seats sent me into a state of bliss I’ve never experienced on a flight before – how will I ever go back to economy?

Okay, there’s quite a lot to unpack (please forgive all the travel puns), so let’s start with the surprising partnership between Manchester United and Malaysian Airlines, a strategic move on the airline’s part to increase its global reach to the football club’s 1.1 billion fans. With Kuala Lumpur deemed as one of the key hubs in South Asia and as a member of the oneworld® alliance, Malaysia Airlines impressively connects to over 900 destinations and 170 territories globally (including Manchester via London) and has been named the Official Commercial Airline for Manchester United.

In case anyone has any doubt about Manchester’s appeal in Malaysia, there is a significant fan base across three supporter clubs, with the Kuala Lumpur branch having one of the largest communities of Manchester United fans in the country. If the crowd gathering around Manchester United’s superstar legends Patrice Evra and Wes Browne at the recent MATTA (Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents) Fair 2024 was anything to go by, then this partnership is sure to boost immersive experiences for both brands.

Some women shop for shoes like I shop for travel, and the MATTA Fair was my version of a mega shopping mall that Kuala Lumpur is famous for, particularly with so many of the destinations showcased easily accessible from the Malaysian capital.

MATTA was the perfect launch pad to announce Malaysia Airlines’ three new routes to Male (Maldives) and Da Nang (Vietnam) in August, and Chiang Mai (Thailand) five times a week starting in September 2024, which I found particularly exciting as this vibrant city in Northern Thailand is one of my favourite destinations. You know when you buy a new dress and decide to splurge on a pair of shoes to match? Well, surely the announcement of an exciting sporting partnership and the new routes were also worthy of the upcoming launch of new seats in economy and business classes on the new A330neo aircraft, scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2024. In the meantime, I’ll be clocking up as many Enrich points as possible for the opportunity to relax in the new award-winning Recaro CL3810 Economy Class seats on the A330neo, which have been ergonomically designed with enhanced support and added amenities like coat hooks, cup holders and ample stowage. Out of the 297 seats economy seats, 24 will feature extra legroom.

A slither of a country, Vietnam is cocooned between China, Cambodia, Laos and the South China Sea. Once divided by war, Saigon formerly held rank as the capital in the south until reunification in 1976 when it was renamed to Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi in the north took the reins. In Central Vietnam, and just an hour’s drive from Da Nang International Airport, the Lāng Cô region knows no such drama.

As we approached our resort Angsana Lāng Cô and passed by grazing water buffalo and conical hats bobbing in rice paddies, the verdant Truong Son mountain range shrouded in mist threatened to tumble into the East Sea. Visiting in January during winter, we were surprised at how chilly this part of Vietnam was at this time of the year and if you’re after a tropical frolic, it’s probably best to visit during the high season from May to October. I personally didn’t mind the relief from the humidity of the south and loved any excuse to remain horizontal with a signature Rainmist Classic experience or tension releasing Vitality starter massage at Angsana Spa Lāng Cô after a yoga or Pilates session.

I doubt I’d ever need an excuse to linger in our two-bedroom beachfront villa, which was 159m2 of luxury featuring a central living and dining area leading out to the deck and private pool with Canh Duong Beach at our feet. Each bedroom included an en-suite bathroom and was located on either side of the living area, making it perfect for families (especially with the fully-supervised kids club), two couples or friends travelling together. Other configurations ranged from the Garden Balcony Grand to the extravagant two-bedroom Angsana Skypool Sea View Loft.

There’s as much adventure or relaxation as you can handle including the 18-hole Faldo-designed Laguna Golf Lāng Cô or a visit to the local fishing village or on-site activities such as Vietnamese cooking classes. Also on offer are jungle hikes, bungee trampolining, ATV safaris, mountain biking, parasailing, paddle-boarding, kayaking or follow the lazy river snaking for 300 metres through the entire resort.

Onsite are several restaurants from the buffet style Market Place (it’s easy to spot the Australians as they make a beeline for the vegemite at breakfast) to Vietnamese favourites at Moomba and the rooftop Upper Deck for sunset cocktails. The standout was the hilltop Saffron Restaurant, a short buggy ride away at the Banyan Tree, also part of the Laguna Lāng Cô complex. Offering Thai cuisine inspired by the Imperial family and served on hand-crafted stoneware and gold cutlery, we began with a hand-washing ceremony in jasmine-scented water.

Under the direction of Chef Renu Homsombat, we were lavished with refined dishes such as crispy noodles wrapped in sweet prawns, chicken and beef satay, and squid with squid ink sauce. The mango sorbet was so delicate it barely existed on the tongue before dissolving into fleeting bliss. The duck curry with lychee and pineapple compote delivered a mix of sweet, sour and spicy flavours with each mouthful. The pork rib with pepper and honey, and beef short rib with logans were rich in flavour and served with four types of rice – brown, saffron, jasmine and pandan. Just as I was willing rice pairing to become the next food trend in Perth, our desert of mango sticky rice arrived.

A true escape from Western reality, Laguna Lāng Cô is a destination in its own right. However, if you did want to venture further afield here are two incredible day trips.

Day trip to Hoi An

Once a busy port between the 15^th and 19^th centuries, the UNESCO-list town of Hoi An holds an ethereal quality within its lantern lit streets. Boasting grand colonial architecture interspersed with temples billowing in clouds of incense and ancient teahouses, travel back in time while meandering through the many museums and the iconic Japanese covered bridge. Don’t forget to enjoy a haggle at the markets and if time permits, linger after sunset to witness the ancient tradition of lanterns floating down the river at night.

Must eat: Cao lâu noodles are only served in Hoi An and legend has it they are prepared with the water from the ancient Ba Le Well mixed with the ash from trees from the nearby Cham Islands.

If you’re lucky enough to extend your trip in Hoi An, Namia River Retreat is due to open in late 2024. Set on the Thu Bon River, 60 luxurious pool villas inspire mindfulness and wellbeing, with plenty of gastronomic indulgences and cultural immersion. With so many fantastic deals with VietJet and direct flights from Perth, I’m definitely adding Namia River Retreat to the list.

Day trip to Huê

Exuding the glory of imperial Vietnam, Hue modestly remains off the tourist radar. Just an hour away from Lāng Cô and situated along the Perfume River, the 19^th-century Citadel dating back to 1362 still stands and is testament to the country’s resilience. You could easily lose an entire day just wondering through the expansive ruins and its alleys outside of the citadel moat. Or join a countryside cycling tour through rice paddies, markets and villages for a unique perspective.

Must eat: Emperor Tu Duc, the emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, was rumoured to have never eaten the same meal twice in a year. As a result, the legacy of his inventive personal chefs remains with dishes such as bânh bèo (rice pancakes), co’m hên (clam rice) and Bùn bò Huê (spicy beef noodle soup).
