Happy New Year! I know, it’s been a while since I’ve sent you a newsletter. I could give you all kinds of reasons for the delay, but I won’t bore you. It seems like 2025 has been a big year for everyone, myself included. I’ve had so many incredible experiences, with highs and lows on a scale as grand as the Dolomites, which I didn’t conquer when I visited in October.

Travel writing is a privilege, and a rewarding one at that. I’d never be granted access to so many places without it, and in fact, I wouldn’t even know about the existence of certain events and people without the opportunities that travel writing presents.

On the flip side, there’s an awful lot that goes into producing a blog post, a photo, an article, a social media post or anecdote, and if I’m doing my job well, you’ll never be aware of what goes on behind the scenes. Travel writers tread a very fine line between presenting the truth versus reality. It’s not that we’re not telling the truth, but I believe it’s our job to inspire, not deter, others to visit those destinations and create their own versions of what we’re posting all over social media.

But sometimes things go wrong. Other times, we’re not feeling it or so far out of our comfort zone that we’re unable to process what’s happening before us. Logistical challenges are all part of the norm, as is burnout, illness, fatigue and the yearning to wake up in your own bed regardless of the thread count.

Like me, you’ve probably received a plethora of newsletters about incredible travels over the past year and where you should be planning to go in 2026. But I’m going to get real with you and share some of my misadventures over the last year. On a positive note, the fact that I’m still excited about writing about my travels shouldn’t put you off from your own potential misadventures, but instead inspire you to keep on exploring the world. And besides, those mishaps often make the best stories that you’ll rarely see published in mainstream media.

So, without further delay, I present you with some of 2025’s travel misadventures.

To read the newsletter, click here, and don’t forget to subscribe so you can receive it in your inbox.

When searching for your next affordable destination, you can’t go wrong in the Philippines. I’m not suggesting for a moment that you dismiss other parts of Southeast Asia, but this unique destination offers so much, especially when travelling on a budget. Idyllic beaches framed by swaying palm trees are just the start of this archipelago’s appeal for Australian travellers looking for an affordable tropical getaway. The eclectic cuisine and warm Filipino hospitality are a natural drawcard for budget travellers and digital nomads, especially when flights to the Philippines are so affordable.

Why the Philippines is so affordable

Affordable flights from Australia

Philippine Airlines (PAL), the Philippines’ flag carrier, flies directly from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Once you land in Manila, Philippine Airlines has seamless onward connections to 32 domestic destinations and 40 international destinations, including Australia and Japan.

Special Black Friday deal: If you book between 21st November and 1st December 2025, you’ll get incredible savings for valid travel from 21st November 2025 onwards, with return fares starting from $720 (if flying from Perth) in economy. The fare includes checked baggage of 30 kg, seat reservation, miles earned, and flexibility. These inclusive bonuses are a rarity with budget airlines and even some full-service airlines.

Book now at www.philippineairlines.com

Affordable accommodation in the Philippines

The Philippines caters to all accommodation budgets, ranging from beachfront guesthouses to affordable luxury, often costing less than in Bali, Thailand or Malaysia. In fact, you’ll be surprised at the value, even in mid-range hotels and resorts costing significantly less than other tropical destinations.

Booking tips: There are simply too many accommodation options to list, but booking during the shoulder seasons (May – June and October – November) can help reduce your accommodation costs.

Filipino Food: Local and budget-friendly

Eating in the Philippines is both an adventure and a money-saver. Local eateries, known as carinderias, offer hearty meals like adobo, sinigang and grilled seafood for just a few dollars. Street food is plentiful, and even dining at trendy cafes in cities like Manila of Cebu are surprisingly affordable.

Action-packed Philippines

You can do as much or as little as you want in the Philippines and never be bored. You’re surrounded by vibrancy and humanity, both enchanting and confronting in equal measure. Many of the country’s attractions are natural and free. Beaches, waterfalls, rice terraces, lagoons and hiking trails attract minimal fees. Even guided activities like snorkelling, island-hopping and scuba diving in places like Palawan, Siargao and Cebu tend to be more affordable than in other tropical destinations. Heading to a local market never fails to entertain while sampling the local cuisine.

Cheap transportation options on land, air and sea

Consisting of around 7,000 islands, Philippines Airlines services 32 local destinations and several airlines often have flights on sale, including Philippine Airlines. Colourful jeepneys, tricycles and buses offer very low-cost travel within the cities and towns. Ferries and fast crafts make island-hopping accessible and fun on any budget.

Best budget destinations in the Philippines

Puerto Princesa and Palawan

Often dubbed “the most beautiful islands in the world,” Palawan offers hidden lagoons and limestone cliffs on inexpensive tours. Also home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Underground River and coral-rich waters teeming with marine life.

Cebu

A perfect mix of urban adventures and natural beauty, Cebu mightn’t be the prettiest island, but it’s certainly interesting. Once a Chinese trading port and claimed by the Spanish centuries ago, the architecture alone is worth admiring. While here, you must sample the local delicacy of suckling pig named lechon.

If you’re considering Cebu, you might enjoy reading Divine diversity: holier than Cebu

Bohol

So much diversity is on offer in Bohol without overspending. The Chocolate Hills, beaches and riverside escapes have placed this destination at the top of the list on my next visit to the Philippines.

Manila

You can’t miss the capital for a lively mix of culture and nightlife, ranging from high-end dining to street food, and a thriving arts and music scene.

Tips for travelling the Philippines on any budget

Travel during shoulder seasons for lower airfares and accommodation rates, and to avoid the crowds

Eat local to save money and most importantly, to try authentic flavours

Jump in a jeepney to get around

Book domestic flights early and take advantage of promotional fares

Travel slow, fewer transfers mean lower transportation costs

If you’re craving a tropical break where the surf and sunset cocktails rule supreme, the Holiday Inn Resort Bali Canggu delivers the ultimate island escape. Especially if you’re from Perth, where the three-hour flight time will have a mojito in your hand in no time. Located steps from Batu Bolong Beach, this vibrant resort blends laid-back coastal living with contemporary comfort, perfect for a weekend getaway or a longer tropical recharge if you can wing it.

Best location for a weekend getaway in Bali: Canggu

Set in the heart of Canggu, the resort is perfectly placed for beach clubs, surfing, boutiques and cute cafes designed for living out digital nomad dreams. Everything is within walking distance of the Holiday Inn Resort Bali Canggu, which is a big plus if you’re only in Bali for a short stay.

Batu Bolong Beach is a stroll away, beckoning sunrise walks and sunset sessions. It doesn’t get much more idyllic than cocktails from the resort’s rooftop bar as the sun slips into the ocean, but if you’re looking for more action, The Lawn Canguu and Old Men’s also offer epic views and lively evenings.

For a weekend getaway in Canggu, the convenience is everything and being so close to the best of Canggu means you will spend less time in Bali’s notorious traffic.

Fun vibes and chic design

The fresh design at the Holiday Inn Resort Bali Canggu feels playful and unmistakably tropical. Natural wood accents, colourful details, and contemporary furnishings give the resort a youthful energy while remaining polished.

Modern design elements pop against traditional Balinese aesthetics and the resort is designed by Bangkok-based Nava Studios in partnership with Placebo, a boutique design studio hailing from Jakarta. Contemporary amenities include a fitness centre, kids’ club and all-day dining.

The rooftop infinity pool is a standout feature – a social hub to gather around for sunset drinks or a dip at anytime of the day or night for showstopping sunsets

Why Canggu is perfect for a weekend getaway

Canggu can get busy, but there’s a good reason why it’s so popular for surfing, yoga, cafés, bar hopping and beachside cocktails. It’s not as hectic as Seminyak, and the laid-back beach vibe offers a creative and bohemian culture that attracts digital nomads and surfers in equal measure.

This compact enclave is easy to explore for a weekend but also lively enough to keep things interesting. For travellers short on time, that balance makes all the difference.

Funky rooms and suites

The resort’s 144 rooms, one-bedroom suites and special kids suites (ideal for families and friends) at the Holiday Inn Resort Bali Canggu are bright, modern and thoughtfully designed. Plush bedding, high-speed wi-fi, smart TVs, air-conditioning and private balconies elevate the experience, especially if you’ve scored a room with an ocean view.

I particularly like the coastal décor and the sliding walls in the bathroom, which you can close for privacy or open to maximise natural light and views.

Dining at the Holiday Inn Resort Bali Canggu

Unpretentious dining is what Canggu is all about at Roomah Restaurant, ranging from generous breakfast spreads to casual poolside snacks and cocktails at the Rooftop Pool Bar. The menu boasts a mix of Indonesian and Western dishes with an emphasis on fresh ingredients and healthy options.

Of course, you’re surrounded by endless smoothie bowls and satays galore just steps away for a change of scenery.

Travel tips for a Bali weekend getaway

Arrive as early as possible on Friday to maximise your weekend and fly out as late as possible on Sunday night, or Monday if you’re lucky enough to have a long weekend.

Make sure you have your eVisa organised in advance.

Consider only packing hand luggage to make getting out of the airport quicker. Bali’s tropical weather means you’ll only need light clothing, and your bikini, of course.

Book an airport transfer to avoid long taxi queues.

If you’re a confident driver (where ‘confident’ is the operative word), rent a scooter or rely on Grab to get around to those places you can’t reach on foot.

Make reservations for your activities, restaurants and beach clubs in advance.

Don’t ever leave home without travel insurance, and be sure to check the conditions, especially if you plan on renting a scooter.

The dry season between May and September offers milder weather, and Bali’s year-round tropical weather is part of the charm.

La Brisa Sunday Market

Things to do in Canggu

Less is more when you’re short on time in balmy Bali, and Canggu has plenty to offer such as:

Several markets, especially on weekends such as La Brisa Sunday Market (Sundays only), Old Man’s Market (last Saturday of every month) and Bali Niki Natural Art Market (daily).

Surfing lessons at Batu Bolong Beach

Go café and bar hopping, popping in wherever takes your fancy. I personally love Yuki for modern Japanese, Black Sand Brewery and Roomah Restaurant in your hotel.

Enjoy the sunset on a beanbag at Batu Bolong Beach, Berawa Beach and Echo Beach

Settle into a beach club for the day, as there are so many to choose from, including FINNS Beach Club, the boho-chic La Brisa and The Lawn, and you must experience at least one sunset at the Rooftop Pool Bar.

Have you even been to Bali if you haven’t indulged in at least one massage or taken a yoga class?

If you’re dreaming of a romantic Bali getaway, where the palm trees sway in time to the ebb and flow of the tide, The Laguna, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Nusa Dua, Bali is only a three-hour flight from Perth.

Whether it’s your honeymoon, a special occasion or a well-deserved escape for two, the Laguna is one of the best romantic resorts in Bali, especially for those short on time since it’s the resort only a short drive from the Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Private beach access, spa treatments and spectacular sunset dinners by the sea are the makings of any romantic Bali getaway.

Best location for a Romantic Bali Getaway: Nusa Dua beachfront

The Laguna sits on the powdery-white shore of Nusa Dua Beach, one of Bali’s most exclusive beachfront locations. Nusa Dua is renowned for its upscale resorts attracting guests craving luxury and seclusion.

Only a short drive from the Ngurah Rai International Airport, you will have a cocktail in your hand in no time when flying out of Perth.

The Laguna spoiled us

Romantic vibes & luxury design

The Laguna is a hidden oasis that feels far away from Bali’s maddening pace. Barefoot luxury, combined with traditional Balinese architecture, set in tropical grounds, creates an elegant backdrop to the resort’s welcoming hospitality.

What to pack? Floaty resort wear by day, and something a little sexier for candlelit dinners and cocktails under the stars.

Travel Tips for a romantic Bali getaway

Visit during the low season from November to March for fewer tourists and more privacy. Plus, the airfares and rates will be cheaper, giving you more opportunities to splurge on your lover.

If visiting during the wet and low season, book a front row seat at Arwana or Kulkul Beach House as the dramatic tropical storms roll in.

The Laguna falls under the Marriott Bonvoy brand so it’s worth joining for the points and perks.

The Laguna’s lush grounds

Things to do in Nusa Dua for couples:

Relax on the long stretch of beach at Mengiat Beach (Nusa Dua Beach) where the calm water is ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

See the famous Nusa Dua Water Blow on Peninsula Island where the water crashing through a hole in the volcanic rock surges for 30 metres in the air. Hot tip: there is an entry fee and its only worth going at high tide.

Stroll or cycle along the Nusa Dua Promenade spanning for around seven kilometres, preferably in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is less harsh.

Visit Museum Pasifika for local and Southeast Asian art.

The Bali Collection is perfect for a shopping spree and a short stroll away.

Watersports offer a unique perspective of the coastline and can be organised through The Laguna.

Have you even been to Bali if you don’t have a fresh coconut?

Is The Laguna Worth it for couples?

Is it really Autumn already? As they say, time flies when you’re having fun, and speaking of flying, I recently joined the inaugural flight from Perth to Bali with TransNusa. My full review will be published shortly, but in the meantime, I will share how much I appreciated the convenient flight times. Leaving Perth at 13.55, I had a cocktail in my hand at The Laguna, in Nusa Dua, by the time the sun set.

While in Bali, I was fortunate to also stay at the InterContinental Bali Resort in Jimbaran and the Holiday Inn Canggu, before heading to Ubud and a brief jaunt to North Bali. My time in Ubud coincided with Nyepi, the day of silence on 29th March. In the lead-up to Nyepi, cleansing ceremonies and parades happened all over the island, with the entire community getting involved, including the Ogoh Ogoh parade, where demon statues were paraded through the streets over the entire island and then burned, as pictured on the cover of this issue. This noisy and chaotic tradition completely contrasted with the following day, when everyone spent 24 hours reflecting, adhering to the rules of no entertainment, lights, cooking, work, or travel – no one was even allowed to go outside. I’ve never known Bali to be so quiet, and I wish we had this time of reflection in Perth. There aren’t many places where a festival has the ability to shut down the airport, and if you would like to hear more about my experience, please listen to this segment on Travel Writers Radio.

In February, I headed to Sydney for the annual IMM (International Media Marketplace) and spent an entire day speed networking with back-to-back meetings with tourism operators and boards. As intense as the experience was, I’m already looking forward to IMM 2026, as it’s an invaluable resource for travel writers, especially those living on the West Coast, far removed from a lot of the action.

I’ve also shared some of my published articles from Japan, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Broome in this newsletter issue. Even if a trip isn’t on the cards, who doesn’t love a bit of inspiration and armchair travel?

Happy Fluffy Travels.

ANA flight review – Business Class flight No. NH882 Perth to Tokyo

The prospect of a flatbed on a long-haul overnight flight made the moments leading up to departure just a little more exhilarating. After a quick gin and tonic and a selfie with the quokka in the Aspire Lounge, my good fortune became all the more real when turning left instead of right from the airbridge for a sneak peek of the cabin before the other guests boarded our ANA (All Nippons

My seat was everything I could have hoped for; a fully reclining flatbed with a mattress topper, a cosy blanket and a plush pillow promised a good night’s sleep that I desperately needed. The next day, I knew I’d hit the ground running with a connecting flight to Haneda followed by an afternoon and evening of activities in Matsuyama, the capital of the Ehime Prefecture.

But for the time being, I intended on making the most of this luxurious flight, the latest movies and TV shows on the 18-inch touch screen (with provided noise-cancelling headphones) and the gourmet food that ANA and Japan are renowned for.

In Business Class, the 787-9 Dreamliner features staggered seats where every seat has direct access to the aisle, and the middle seats have privacy screens and do not disturb signs. A large side table with a light, and USB and power ports complemented a pull-out table, so there was no shortage of flat surfaces. Storage under the ottoman was roomy but difficult to access when the seat was fully reclined, requiring me to be organised before tucking myself in for the night, not that I had any intention of rummaging around in my bag once snuggled up.

Okay, I’m going to sound like a bit of a princess now. I love a soft mattress, and so do my hips and back. It has to be noted that the seat was on the firm side. Most of the mattresses in Japan are hard, so the firmness of the airline seat wasn’t entirely surprising. In hindsight, I should have asked for an additional mattress topper to soften my journey.

Most hotels in Japan include a set of freshly laundered pyjamas, as do ANA if you request to borrow a set on board. Although you must return the pyjamas, you can keep the amenity kit containing lip balm, body lotion and a tote bag.

One other thing worth noting is the seat configuration of the 1-2-1 layout. I was in seat 8E, in the middle and in front of the toilet, which is convenient for nocturnal ablutions, but it was a trade-off whenever the toilet flushed throughout the night. Speaking of the toilet, it was kept immaculate and odour-free throughout the flight and was well-stocked with toiletries, including an endless supply of towelettes, toothbrushes and toothpaste to keep you fresh. If I ever had the fortune of flying business class again with ANA, I would choose a window seat closer to the front of the plane. But I really am nit-picking here.

The menu offered a choice of Japanese and International meals, when in Rome I chose Japan, with sake of course. However, the Western meal looked delicious, too, with a beef fillet steak and a caramel chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce.

After a white tablecloth was laid out on my table, the meal tray arrived with an assortment of Japanese delicacies. Starting with Zensai (a selection of morsels), which consisted of Simmered Taro with Minced Chicken Sauce, Deep-fried Shrimp with Cornflakes, Cheese wrapped with Smoked Salmon and a Simmered Tokobushi Abalone in a Soy-based Sauce. Yes, you read that right; abalone was on the menu. The next course of Kobachi (tasty tidbits) was my favourite, with Tuna and Green Onion with Mustard Vinegar Miso, where the acidity of the mustard vinegar elevated the flavour of the tuna. The main dish (Shusai) was Salt-grilled Salmon with Steamed rice, Miso Soup and Japanese Pickles, and a Baked Yuzu Confectionery for dessert (Kanmi). Although this meal was substantial, I didn’t feel bloated at all – I simply love the lightness of Japanese cuisine.

After several hours of sleep, we were gently woken by the lights subtly being turned up to announce the arrival of breakfast. I chose the Japanese option again of a Scallop and Daikon Radish with Yuzu Sauce, followed by Simmered Pork and Cabbage in White Miso with Steamed Rice. Yum, yum, yum.

At this point, I realised we only had an hour left onboard. Usually, I’d be eager to get offboard, but this was not the case. I didn’t want the flight to end. I still had to work my way through And Just Like That. Or I could have diligently caught up on some work as Wi-Fi was offered, and although I didn’t try it out, a colleague mentioned that the download speed was 16.9 Mbps and 5.12 Mbps for uploads.

Before I knew it, I was propelled into Tokyo’s International Airport, excited to start the day of exploration ahead.

ANA flight review – Economy class flight NH881 Tokyo to Perth

After a whirlwind of a trip in Japan in the Ehime and Hiroshima Prefectures and a fleeting few hours in Tokyo, I was ready to relax for 9 ½ hours on the return flight to Perth. From Narita Airport in Tokyo, the check-in process was seamless with the face express check-in and self-bag drop-off machines. Yet, another example of Japanese efficiency.

Last minute Matcha shopping at Narita Airport

As check-in had gone so smoothly, I had plenty of free time to browse the shops and sample some of the best ramen (you’d never have guessed it was vegan from the flavour) I’ve ever had with a double espresso for breakfast.

When I had preselected my aisle seat, I noticed I had the entire row to myself. After receiving an upgrade on the way over, surely, I wouldn’t be so lucky on the journey home. But luck was on my side, and even before take-off, I was snuggled up by the window with two seats to stretch out on. Bliss.

An impressive amount of leg room in ANA economy class

The legroom was impressive, and had I not travelled over on Business Class, I suspect I would still have been very comfortable with the 34-inch seat pitch, footrest and adjustable headrest. Once again, the seat was firm but nothing that a cushion couldn’t fix, especially as I had three to choose from with the entire row to myself.

Mood lighting and the black-out window set the mood for a chilled flight as we floated home alongside fluffy clouds.

Fluffy clouds for Fluffy Towel

After a week of Japanese food, I thought I’d try the Western meal on the return home instead of the Japanese meal of Chicken & Eggs over Steamed Rice. The Hashed Beef Stew in Red Wine was rich and delicious and served with Steamed Chicken and Pumpkin Salad with Ponzu Gelèe, a Vegetable Namul (Kobachi), a mixed salad, cheese and crackers and vanilla Hàagen-Dazs Ice Cream. Dinner was light and included a panini, fruit salad and yoghurt.

Although I was very happy with my meal, there is the option to upgrade to Paid Exclusive Dining in advance. The meals vary, and had I done this for $25, I would have chosen the beef steak with all the trimmings. Something to look forward to next time I fly with ANA.

I spent the flight eating, dozing, reading and binging on all those movies on the 9-inch touch-screen monitor I’ve been meaning to watch, such as Fly Me To The Moon and Ezra (I highly recommend both), and of course, I resumed And Just Like That.

Once again, the flight ended way too fast, and my transition through Perth Airport was so smooth that I was home within the hour.

I hope you enjoyed this ANA flight review. Overall, both flights took me back to a time when flying felt special. The warm staff was always ready with a smile and provided wonderful service. The cutlery was real, the inflight entertainment was exceptional, and the food was plentiful and tasty. The roomy seats enhanced the experience, and everything was included on this full-service airline. Budget airlines certainly have their place in the market for short jaunts, but for a long-haul flight, I’d never scrimp on the flight as there isn’t a price you can put on arriving refreshed.

For me, ANA is a return to the glory days of travel, where the flight is part of the journey.

ANA flights between Perth and Tokyo

ANA resumed their non-stop flights from Perth to Tokyo on 29th October 2024. Flying three times a week on Monday, Thursday and Saturday between Perth and Narita, the route is set to add approximately 17,000 passengers over a five-month period to March 2025. Not only does this open up the destination of Japan to Western Australian travellers, but it also makes WA more appealing to travellers from Japan and boosts the tourism and hospitality sector.

As a Star Alliance member, flights with ANA can be booked using Velocity Points, but if you’re flying on a paid ticket, you can earn Velocity Points and Status Credits.

ANA flies domestically and internationally to Asia, Perth, Sydney, the US and Europe.

Fun fact: Did you know that Okinawa Island in Japan is a blue zone, deemed as having one of the longest-living populations in the world? Participating in activities such as travel that bring you joy can improve your health and well-being, ultimately leading to longevity. You can read more about it in Is Travel the Key to Longevity?

We’ll be exploring Perth, the state’s capital city, from a unique perspective, as well as everyone’s favourite port town, Fremantle and then Western Australia’s oldest wine region in the Swan Valley. You and your besties will require a sense of adventure and a healthy appetite for this memorable 3-day Perth itinerary.

Perth Itinerary Day 1: The CBD

Lace up your sneakers and bring your sense of adventure as we head to Elizabeth Quay, deemed Perth’s premier waterfront entertainment precinct. Hovering between the Swan River and Perth’s CBD, follow the Elizabeth Quay Bridge for a unique perspective of the city skyline punctuated by the curvaceous Spanda, a sculpture representing the rippling river.

Elizabeth Quay Tour with Little Ferry Co, Perth

At 10am, board a boutique solar electric ferry with The Little Ferry Co. and get off at Optus Stadium, WA’s 60,000-seat state-of-the-art multi-purpose stadium. But we’re not going to see a match or a concert. Instead, we’re going to climb 314 steps above the river to the SkyView and then zipline 400m back down at 75km/hr. I say “we”, but if like me, heights terrify you, I have a less scary option – you can enjoy a round at the 18-hole Matagarup Mini Golf course next door or simply walk across the bridge to East Perth for riverfront dining at Goia, The Partisan, Toast Café or The Royal on the Waterfront. Or, if you’re on the same side of the river as Optus Stadium, enjoy lunch at one of the country’s largest pubs at The Camfield.

You can either jump back on the ferry or grab an Uber to the city at your leisure. This afternoon, explore the city on foot by browsing the shops in Forrest Place, the Hay Street Mall, Murray Street Mall and King Street for high-end fashion. Running between the Hay Street Mall and St George’s Terrace, don’t miss the historic Tudor-style London Court full of souvenir shops and old-world charm, plus chiming clocks at each of the entrances with miniature knights engaging in battle as the clocks chime. Or head into Northbridge in search of dim sum in Chinatown, my favourite is the Northbridge Chinese Restaurant on Roe Street.

London Court

If nature is calling, one of the world’s largest inner-city parks hovers over the city at Kings Park, Perth’s answer to New York City’s Central Park. Spanning over 400 hectares of natural scrub, kilometres of walking and cycling trails and 17 hectares of botanical gardens and the Lotterywest Federation Walkway. Time your visit right for the year-round calendar of music, theatre, film, art, wellness and horticultural events and festivals. Mulled wine will keep you warm during Lightscape during the cooler months as Kings Park’s landscape comes to life at night through Gar-up Lookout, Kings Perthugh a series of light installations – it’s a magical way to experience the park.

If time permits, take a wander through the Perth Cultural Centre to admire the impressive architecture, WA’s rich history and talented artists at the WA Museum Boola Bardip, the Art Gallery of Western Australia and PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts), which all have permanent and transitional exhibitions and events throughout the year.

Or you can join the fray in Northbridge brimming with bars and cuisine from all over the globe, or join a walking tour with Hidden DeTours. Alternatively, you might crave some culture with a show at the State Theatre Centre (Northbridge), His Majesty’s Theatre (Perth), the Comedy Club (Perth), Crown Entertainment Complex (Burswood), The Astor (Mt Lawley), Regal Theatre (Subiaco) or the Ellington Jazz Club (Perth).

Perth Itinerary Day 2: Fremantle

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast and epic views of the Indian Ocean at Bib & Tucker (Leighton Beach) or the Roasting Warehouse (I highly recommend the Eggs Benny Chan) in South Fremantle. Or head to the eateries within the historic Fremantle Markets for a pastry, multi-cultural options and excellent coffee before enjoying a wander around the 150 stalls of art, jewellery, clothing, fresh produce, performance art and buskers.

Fremantle markets

While you’re in the mood for shopping, meander along the Cappuccino Strip (aka South Terrace), High Street Mall and the West End Heritage Precinct for unique boutiques, jewellery, homewares stores, and you can’t miss the New Edition Bookshop. There is just as much to admire on the streets with Fremantle’s stunning architecture, street art and galleries, such as the Moore’s Building Contemporary Art Gallery, Kidogo ArtHouse and PS Art Space (Pakenham Street Art Space).

National Hotel, Fremantle

While in Fremantle’s West End, make a pitstop at the Round House, the state’s oldest building offering fantastic ocean vistas and views across Fremantle. Follow Whalers Tunnel beneath the Round House to Bather’s Beach for lunch with sand between your toes at The Bathers Beachhouse. Or head back into town to Moore & Moore, Bread In Common or Gino’s on the Cappuccino Strip for a bite.

Fremantle’s cappuccino strip

Delve further into Fremantle’s cultural heart at the gothic-style Fremantle Arts Centre, built in 1864 by convicts as a lunatic asylum and believed to be one of the most haunted spots in the state. Spread over four acres, the centre hosts an extensive program of visual art exhibitions, live performances and creative workshops.

Fremantle’s outdoor art gallery

Or embrace WA’s rich maritime history at the Shipwreck Galleries, where you can explore some of Australia’s oldest shipwrecks. The WA Maritime Museum is equally fascinating, so don’t miss the Submarine Ovens, a memorial to the submariners who lost their lives during WWII and the America’s Cup-winning yacht Australia II.

Fremantle Prison is especially spooky at night

Join a day tour at the Fremantle Prison, or take the haunting a step further on a nighttime torchlight tour and be enthralled by the port town’s sordid past. Daredevils can visit the gruesome gallows and trek by foot and boat through the labyrinth of tunnels 20 metres below on the Tunnels Tour.

You’ll wash away all that gruesomeness tonight with a bar hop and snacks through Fremantle. Simply strolling the streets will reveal a plethora of bars for you to discover yourself. Some of my favourites include the limited-release gins and vodkas at the Republic of Fremantle, Strange Company, the pirate-inspired Darling Darling, Jungle Bird and Vin Populi, and although I haven’t been there yet, the Honky Tonk Blues Bar intrigues me for its southern hospitality and live music.

Republic of Fremantle, Fremantle, credit Tourism Western Australia

If your schedule permits, extend your time with a day trip or longer on Rottnest Island, about a 30-minute ferry ride from Fremantle. Famed for its quokkas, explore the island by bike, segway, bus or on foot on one of the few remaining spots on earth where cars are banned. The coastal vistas, craggy coves, snorkelling and unspoilt beaches are reminiscent of the Mediterranean complete with beachside dining and epic sunsets.

As you board your minibus, you can take a little snooze to sleep off last night’s indulgences, but not for long as we head to WA’s original wine region in the Swan Valley, about 30 minutes from the city.

Brace yourself, as the Swan Valley is full of temptations at its many wineries, breweries, distilleries, restaurants and fresh produce outlets. You might like to make a pitstop at Swan Valley Visitors Centre to pick up a map and plot your own adventure or download a map here.
Here are my suggestions for the ultimate day out in the Swan Valley with friends.

Stop for coffee and a macaroon at the French-inspired Maison Saint Honorè, before heading for a wine tasting at Lancaster Wines, set among vines for as far as the eye can see. On the other side of West Swan Road, you might like to pop into the Providore and Coward & Black to pick up some gourmet treats, and it’s pretty self-explanatory why anyone of any age visits the Margaret River Chocolate Factory.

The Swan Valley isn’t only about wine, Old Young’s Distillery

Stop at the Old Young’s Distillery for a tasting of their gin and vodkas. You could join a gin masterclass or stop here for lunch and sample their tasty menu of native ingredients. Or hit the road and head to Funk Brewshed https://funkdrinks.co/pages/brewshed, where I have to say their limited-release Cacao Cider cider is my new favourite drink. Succumb to a lazy lunch at Upper Reach, Stewart’s Restaurant, Sandalford Winery or wherever takes your fancy.

Where to stay in Perth:

Click here for a place to stay in Perth. Some of my favourite Perth hotels are the Perth Parmelia Hilton (check out my review here), The Melbourne Hotel, the QT Hotel (check out my review here), the Vibe Hotel Subiaco, and the ultimate in luxury at Crown Towers or the COMO The Treasury.

Getting around Perth:

There are many ways to get around Perth by Uber, public transport or hire a car, which is probably the easiest option. Or you can do it in style and join a tour for all types of tastes in a variety of vehicle sizes, so you can bring as many friends as you want. Tourism Western Australia makes several recommendations here.

Travelling between the domestic or international airport and central Perth is an easy 20 to 30-minute ride by car, taxi, ride share, public bus or train. I took this photo several years ago during a Breastique Art workshop in Perth to support Breast Cancer Care WA. The empowering workshops were designed for women to create beautiful works of art with paint and their boobs. Sadly, Breastique Art is no longer running but given October was Breast Cancer Awareness month, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to shed some light on this awful disease and embrace our bodies.

If you’re reading this post, you’re probably a traveller or at least someone who enjoys consuming travel misadventures and inspiration. Whether you travel to escape your everyday routine or explore the world, many genuinely believe that wellness travel is the key to longevity, myself included.

I honestly believe participating in activities that bring you joy improves your health and well-being. Ultimately, good health contributes to longevity – so if travel is your passion, why not indulge and defy premature ageing in the process?

Fangli Hu

Obviously, I’m not a doctor or a health expert, but Fangli Hu, a researcher in the Centre for Precision Health at Edith Cowan University, has participated in a study exploring the concept that travel is the key to longevity. She was the lead researcher in a paper titled The Principle of Entropy Increase: A novel view of how tourism influences human health. We chatted about wellness travel and whether travel is the key to longevity on Travel Writers Radio, which you can listen to here.

Triggering positive entropy

Our chat delves into this ground-breaking travel therapy research by exploring how tourism triggers entropy changes, where entropy is the general trend of the universe towards death and disorder. The theory is that entropy changes through positive experiences enhance physical, mental and social health and could slow down the signs of ageing. “Ageing, as a process, is irreversible. While it can’t be stopped, it can be slowed down,” says Fangli.

The blue zones, where wellness is a way of life

Perhaps entropy comes into play within the blue zones, which have the longest-living populations. The blue zones include Okinawa (Japan), Italy (Sardinia), Ikaria (Greece), Loma Linda (California) and Nicoya (Costa Rica), with Singapore named the sixth zone in August 2023. To qualify as a blue zone, there must be a high concentration of record-setting ages in the community and with common characteristics of regular movement, low stress, a healthy diet and a clear sense of purpose. With four of these zones being islands, there must be something about island life where wellness is a way of life. Sri Lanka is another island boasting longevity, having one of the longest life expectancies in Southeast Asia, which many believe is attributed to the ancient practice of Ayurveda.

A Shirodhara Ayurveda treatment

The health benefits of wellness travel

The benefits of travel range from relaxation, embarking on a physical challenge or learning about a new culture. Speaking from experience, positive travel experiences certainly have enhanced my own physical and mental health, particularly through wellness travel. I’ve spent some time exploring time this concept with stays at wellness retreats at Fivelements Wellness Retreat (Ubud, Bali), Shreyas Yoga Retreat (Bangalore, India) and Barberyn Ayurveda Resort (Sri Lanka). They were all transformative experiences in their holistic approach to wellness, nurturing the body, mind and soul through nutrition, physical activity such as yoga, and decadent treatments, always in beautiful surroundings. As each retreat centres around local health traditions, cultural immersion is at the core of the experience, and I highly recommend it for a unique holiday you’ll never forget.

Shreyas Yoga Retreat

The act of travel usually requires varying levels of physical exertion and potentially boosts metabolism and energy levels. Even if you plan on flopping on a beach for days on end, think about the effort it takes to get to the beach starting from the moment you leave home. It’s easy to get your steps up in the airport alone. Travelling requires a certain level of fitness, which can inspire even the sedentary of us to maintain our health and make the most out of the journey.

Adventurers already know the health benefits of wellness travel, whether it’s a retreat, walking the Camino de Santiago or diving in the Cocos Islands. You can keep those feel-good endorphins pumping by planning a trip around milestone celebrations such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, honeymoons and graduations for more memory-making journeys with your favourite people.

Travel exposes us to new surroundings, people and activities, elevating metabolic rates and stimulating stress responses while triggering an adaptive immune system. “Put simply, the self-defence system becomes more resilient.
When travel isn’t healthy

On the flip side, there are instances where travel can have an adverse effect on your health. Unsanitary conditions, natural disasters, pandemics, accidents, injuries and safety issues can play havoc with your travel plans and potentially counteract the benefits of travel. Never leaving home without travel and health insurance will alleviate some of the stress, as will consulting with smartraveller.gov.au and the World Health Organisation before booking your trip.

Swap the botox for wellness travel

If travel makes you happy, and promotes good health and longevity, then I can’t think of a better remedy to delaying premature ageing and maintaining a youthful outlook for as long as possible.

The award-winning adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s stage production Poe Dreams of Madness runs at the Garrick Theatre from 27th September to 12th October. I hope you enjoy my theatre review, but here’s a little disclaimer before I delve into this spooky performance.

No matter what anyone claims, theatre reviews are generally subjective, as the writer’s life experiences and nuances can’t help but influence their impressions. Writing a theatre review where your daughter is one of the directors will undoubtedly be biased. How can it not be? Being closely associated with someone who works on and off stage brings unique insight into an industry where drama, determination and grit are the key ingredients. The amount of work involved in putting on a stage production is unfathomable, particularly in community theatre, where the budget is modest and the passion of its volunteers soars.

Poster design by Devon Pearce

Okay, so now that is out of the way, onto the show. Established in 1932, the Garrick Theatre, set in historic Guildford, is Perth’s longest-running community theatre, and the Poe production put on by the TAG (Teens at Garrick) celebrates the theatre group’s 10th anniversary in 2024. TAG encourages 13 to 18-year-olds to explore the theatre industry, from acting to building self-confidence and creatively challenging themselves. For Poe Dreams of Madness, Gail Lusted (founder and director of TAG) shares the role with TAG alumnus Paris Jenner (my daughter) in a collaboration of creativity and vision.

Poe Dreams of Madness is a series of vignettes based on author and poet Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tales in an adaptation scripted by Elissa Hynes. The production features classic and original material, including The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher (currently playing on Netflix), The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red Death and The Raven. While each scene captures a standalone tale, they all weave together cohesively through a rich narrative indulging in a dynamic performance, which at times is chilling, further pronounced by it being performed in a theatre rumoured to be haunted.

It begins at midnight when Poe struggles with insomnia…or at least that’s what he thinks is happening, “I am haunted by dreams, even when I wake. And so, I wander in this dazed stupor, unsure if I am awake or asleep, unsure if I am alive.”

This sets the tone for the entire performance guided by a raven, played by Ginny Moore-Price, acting as a mischievous and macabre character throughout the gothic show.

Much of the talented cast came to the production as novices, which is impressive given their ages, many of who play multiple roles. Their sheer delight at discovering their newfound talent was a joy to witness, and I suspect many will continue to develop their skills; at least, I hope they have the opportunity to do so.

Paris Jenner

This was Paris’ directing debut, and she was also instrumental in taking the headshots for publicity, the set design and sound production. “We are in awe of the cast. They have taken everything we’ve thrown at them and run with it. We had some drop out early on, and rather than recast, we just gave them another character to portray – some play four roles. They exit one scene and immediately come back as somebody completely different. Add to that…a lot of them are first-timers,” shared Paris.

Annie Dahn

Newcomer to the theatre, Annie Dahn plays Poe, whose endearing personality weaves in and out of her evocative narration with impeccable timing. Olivia Keary is the cast’s youngest member and has only been involved with TAG since early 2024. She brought a cheeky quality to her roles, delivering her elocution so eloquently that it belied her tender age of 12.

Clayton Schelfhout made his acting debut and delivered a powerful performance in his compelling portrayal of some of Poe’s most iconic characters. Short in stature but large in presence, Juliette Botha’s experience from high school productions was evident, particularly when playing the scary role of the Mad Narrator. Piper Gibson’s experience as a member of TAG and the WA Youth Theatre’s beginner’s ensemble exuded a maturity beyond her 13 years in several roles, particularly as the sombre Friend.

Poe Dreams of Madness crew and cast

The dialogue is robust, and how the actors remember and convincingly deliver so many lines always amazes me. I loved how varied the storytelling was, woven in intrigue and humour, making it relatable to anyone, whether you’re an avid theatregoer or someone who has come along for a bit of escapism.

The front-of-house and stage design serve the storytelling well by acting as a moody backdrop, versatile enough to interchange between each scene with little disruption to the dialogue and actors. Along with the costumes and haunting soundtrack, this was a clever design choice guided by a limited budget to seek out sustainable options from props sourced from within the theatre and the production team. I had a giggle playing eye-spy at some of my own furnishings and wardrobe appearing on stage – but I won’t ruin the mystery.

Each performance differs from the next as the directing team plays with varying treatments of the scenes while leaning into the cast’s strengths on any given day.

Exploring multiple themes, including madness and the human psyche, no doubt each audience member will take away a unique interpretation of Poe’s stage production. “His stories not only reflect the literary conventions of the Romantic era but also anticipate the psychological horror genre that would later become prominent in literature. Creepy, thought-provoking, eerie, morbid. What more could anyone want?”
